Suggestions for improvement

  • My suggestions would be to ensure all policies, encourage a more positive culture and environment.

What I like about the company

My company is a well known global cruisline n takes up about 8% of the world's travel market. Great company to work for. Management n workers all trained and professional. Very strict working guidelines n policies to keep employees discipline. Good sense of pride n recognition of employees for recognition n awards. Overall a great experience. They give you lots of vacation time. Jobs fairs in big cities in some nations.Take a lot of pride n recycling. All employees go thru an intensive training certified by United States Guard. Suck training is First Aid,Crowd Control,Crisis Management, Firefighting Training n other US Coast Guard training certifications. All employees are issued uniforms, work shoes n boats, personal protective equipment, nametag, company pin. Some employees are drug tested every week. Employees have physical ever 2 years to ensure they are healthy n are to physically work on cruise ship. Typical job assignment is 140 to 168 days with a vacation time of 35 to 42 days. Employees live in free living quarters where a bed, drawers, and closet is probided for them. Also a bathroom, toilet, and shower with a above sink cabinet for toiletries.Rooms are inspected once a week to ensure cleanliness. The company provides a gym where people can excercise at no cost. Their is an arcade room produced for workers. The mooring deck is also the smoke deck for workers to safely smoke cigarettes. There is a bar n snack store provided that was open from 3p to 6p for grocery shopping n 8p to 2am for purchase of snacks n alcohol n soda beverages. The caferia would be open for Buffett from 6am to 9am. Lunch would be from 10am to 2pm Dinner would be from 4pm to 8pm They had a late nite menu from 10pm to 1am. Breakfast was always the best. The menu would be consistent. Eggs both fried and or scrambled. Sausage, bacon, and ham available. Rice, bread, oatmeal, and sometimes pancakes of French toast. Lunch and dinner there was always sandwiches, soup, and salad available. Dinner.

What I dislike about the company

A lot of rules. Random drug and alcohol tests.

Company Culture

It's a culture of fear that you may be next to lose your job. Many senior level managers/executives aren't open to hearing what staff has to say.

Internal Communication

Often hear about important things through the trade magazines before getting a corporate communication.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Ageism is definitely happening here.

Career Development

Limited unless you kiss up to people or are young.

Overall compensation for your work

Not up to industry standards.

Office / Work Environment

Cubicles, cubicles, cubicles.

Company Image

Does not come close to others like Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity, Holland America.

Job Security

NONE!

Suggestions for improvement

  • Stop Downsizing!!!! So many really good, long-time and loyal staff lose their jobs because they have worked there a long time and make too much money. Always penny-pinching, even with their 2 luxury cruise brands. Let the brands operate separately.

What I dislike about the company

The culture, the constant lay-offs.

Company Culture

They make a lot of noise about "caring" and have some events, but constantly are "down-sizing" staff which has created a culture of fear, anxiety and distrust. Upper management is not very hands-on. Each of the 3 brands doesn't like the others. Us vs. Them mentality.

Support from management

Lacking. Many have their own ideas of how things should be done and won't entertain ideas from those below them. Some never come out of their office to interact with their staff. Some members of management often speak badly about some of their workers behind their backs to the employee's peers and share confidential employee information to staff.

Teamwork

Some areas are better than others, but because of the fears of being the next to be down-sized, people are more concerned about protecting themselves.

Internal Communication

Important information often does not make it down to the staff. You read about it in trade publications first or hear it from customers.

Gender Equality

Most men make more than women in similar roles.

Attitude towards older colleagues

The majority of people who are "down-sized" are often older workers. Some older workers who were content to do the same job for a long time were made fun of and accused of having no ambition.

Career Development

Depends on who you know. Very political.

Overall compensation for your work

Those who came in from other companies that were bought by NCLH made significantly more money (and were mostly the ones to get "down-sized" for that fact). Generally below industry standards.

Office / Work Environment

Cubicle city. Only VPs had offices with doors. Difficult to have sensitive conversations with customers/vendors when everyone can hear you. Plus, it gets noisy. Parking is often an issue. Not enough.

Environmental Friendliness

Not overly concerned with recycling.

Work-Life Balance

Expect a lot of extra time from you.

Company Image

Everyone knows NCL is a distant third to Royal Caribbean and Carnival. The joke used to be NCL stands for Nobody Cares Less. It's all about saving nickels and dimes there.

Job Security

None. Every year before Christmas, you held your breath that you weren't going to be on the down-size list that year.

What I like about the company

Some of the people there. Some of the benefits.

What I dislike about the company

The culture. The lack of respect for people that have contributed for many years. The singular focus on saving money vs. quality.
