What I like about the company
A lot of overtime. You get to be involved in the local farming of cranberries. It’s very interesting work. Most of the employees are of the same socio economic background. They look out and take care of each other. It’s a nice area surrounded by woods. They make sure every employee is safe at all times. There is usually a one dollar raise for returning employees. You get a bonus for referring other people. You meet great people. It’s nice extra money for the Christmas season. Everyone around here is involved somehow in the cranberry business. It is owned by individuals not a company. We love coming back every fall to see each other. There are opportunities to earn overtime pay which is hard to find. They hire entire families. You do not need experience. They train you and none of the tasks are too difficult. There are other companies that hire for the same kind of work so you always have a job in the fall. If you earn enough you can collect unemployment when the season ends and take the winters off. The bosses are reasonable but the focus is on water picking and processing the berries to be put in bins, placed on trucks and sent to different freezers to eventually be used as craisins. Cranberries are one of the healthiest fruits you can eat. The bogs are flooded and loaded into big trucks that come to the plant in Carver, Massachusetts. There are different areas in the plant you may be assigned to work; if you do not feel comfortable in a certain position you can request to be moved. There is the office, the tower, the scale house, the incoming lab and the outgoing lab, there’s a binning station and rain forest areas where the water falls and you have to continually sweep the excess water into drains. The bad berries get put into bigger bins and hauled out. They become bad when the temperatures are too high in September or when it’s too cold and a frost covers them. We did not receive raises for returning employees. There’s too much gossiping.
