Suggestions for improvement
- As I mentioned earlier, a policy allowing telecommuting or working from home would be a big improvement, even if it was only for a day a week. Holding off from hiring when work is slow would also be great, and my division could use a few less employees to ensure we all have the appropriate workload.
What I like about the company
I began working here about 8 months ago, and I have had a pretty positive experience overall. My manager is great, I love the other members on my team, and everyone is generally friendly and understanding. I have the chance to work on projects with real, discernible impacts on the people of California, which helps to keep me motivated. The building is very modern, and the 12th floor offers a great view of downtown Sacramento, which is just down the road. The cafe downstairs is pretty good and there area few restaurants nearby. Parking is free, which is a huge perk for government workers in Sacramento. Overall OSHPD is a great place to work.
What I dislike about the company
There is not always enough work for everyone here. Some days, I have to stretch out my work to fill my time. I wish we could just not hire to fill every vacancy, but government hiring is complex and difficult to change.
I would also greatly appreciate a work-from-home option, even if it was only one day a week. This work is perfect for doing from home at least part of the time, and it's a wasted opportunity to not allow it.
