Suggestions for improvement

  • Change how we look at middle level managers and individual contributors in terms of their physical presence in the office. While it would be a significant change to how we do business and manage that business, opening up our talent pool to those that may not be able/willing to work in the office five days a week, every week, would lead to a talent pool much larger and deeper than the individual localized pools each division currently draws from.

What I like about the company

I came to Olympic Steel with plenty of leadership experience but no experience in the steel industry. Olympic Steel provided several weeks of training and put me through their lean six sigma black belt training program and today I manage a department. I've been compensated above typical market rate for my position in this region and have never had to ask or beg for a raise. They've been very accommodating with my family and on multiple occasions have gone above and beyond in taking care of us. I would strongly recommend Olympic Steel as an employer.

What I dislike about the company

I'd like to see more opportunities for work-from-home positions. The company is ran very much brick and mortar style with only a handful of work-from-home options; most of those are entry level positions anyway. More than anything, this limits the talent pool to what's available in the nearby area which may or may not be the best person available everywhere.

Company Culture

Poor communication and employee turnover have been hallmarks of this company. Claims to be family oriented, but absences for family issues received no special considerations as a reason for absence. One "family" event a year.

Support from management

Corporate structure was so that local managers had a direct report at the local level and also at the corporate level who were independent of each other.

Teamwork

There was a management team. However; each had individual expectations that were at odds with other team members. Team was not cohesive.

Freedom to work independently

Managers and supervisors were told that they had autonomy, but expectations and goals were dictated, then closely monitored.

Internal Communication

Communication was poor when I started work there and was even worse by the time I left.

Gender Equality

During the application process, women were given less weight because of the "physical" nature of the warehouse work.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Born in 1952, I was a target of jokes and sarcasm by my boss.

Career Development

Advancement opportunities were few. Continuing education and leadership development was non-existent.

Overall compensation for your work

Unreasonable expectations and goal-setting by my boss coupled with corporate expectations made it impossible to improve compensation. No increase in salary, despite improvements.

Office / Work Environment

Typical steel service center; hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The smell from a neighboring cattle operation was ever present and could be overwhelming at times.

Environmental Friendliness

Social activism is left to the local level. Durant was Rally for the Cure for cancer.

Work-Life Balance

Work was driven by customer demand and delivering material on time. Due to high turnover, overtime was almost automatic occurrence.

Company Image

This company will tell that they are a family friendly business, socially conscious, diverse and forward-thinking, when in reality, they are not. Though I did not go on social media to air my grievances, many employees did and do.

Job Security

There is no job security. Company is driven by profit/loss. Operations Manager will tell employees how easily that they can be replaced as I was on his very first day. He was hired from outside the company and held no allegiance to anyone there.

Handicapped Accessibility

Company claims to have an "open door" policy at local and corporate level, when in fact, employees are discouraged from bringing concerns forward.

Workplace Safety

As Durant's safety coordinator, my time was split between safety and ISO 9001 coordinator. On safety, we were decreasing injuries, as well as severity of injuries. We increased presence on the floor, improved communication between warehouse employees and safety, held monthly meetings and safety stand downs, established safety committee and at the time of my departure, was meeting local/corporate safety goals as well as BLS averages. Payouts to workers compensation were decreasing as well.

Challenging Work

As a safety coordinator, work was very challenging for a company that offered no viable assistance from corporate level. Locations were left to fend for themselves but hit the corporate numbers.

Inclusive / Diverse

Work force was overwhelmingly white male with high school education.
