- Onebeacon Insurance Group LLC12.Dec 2017
OneBeacon, which was part of Berkshire Hathaway, is primarily a financial entity. Employees are incidental to the running of the business, but while loyalty to the company is considered crucial, the company does not feel it necessary to hold any loyalty to its employees.
Support from management
No communications, no accommodation.
Lip service is given.
Freedom to work independently
You get to work home one or two days a week. It is not uncommon to receive a call on your work at home day saying 'So you didn't make it into the office...'
Silence and outright lies.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Push colleagues out before their pensions vest.
I observed none.
Overall compensation for your work
I was never brought to the minimum for my pay grade despite good reviews during my 4 1/2 years at this company and a promotion.
Office / Work Environment
Silent, isolated, team members scattered country-wide. Aging and uncomfortable facilities.
Coworkers - fairly nice.
Management - not so much.
At-will employees owe all their loyalty to the Company and must be ready to put personal issues to one side in order to do their jobs. In this employee's case, serious and continuing family issues were ignored by management.
Bad in the Insurance claims industry.
It is emphasized that you are an 'at will' employee. This company's past history - e.g. promising employees at a company they took over that if they would stay five years they would get $25K and then terminating them one by one prior to the deadline.
They do have ramps, etc. But not all handicaps involve wheelchairs. Hearing and sight disabilities are not really understood or addressed.
The excessive and monotonous workload, the lack of support from management ("we all have our crosses to bear") or coworkers, no accommodation for work-life balance, certainly makes this a challenging place to work.
Inclusive / Diverse
They do have a diverse group and do pay lip-service to it.
Suggestions for improvement
- Start over and do it right.
What I like about the company
It was financially sound.
What I dislike about the company
The climate, the pay, the management, the philosophy, the lack of support and training, the lack of respect.
