Philanthropically, Oracle aims to advance education, protect the environment, and enrich community life. Each year, Oracle Giving donates millions of dollars in cash to nonprofit organizations that provide local and global programs, while Oracle Volunteers in 45 countries donate more than 110,000 hours of their time and talent to support nonprofit organizations and their beneficiaries. At the same time, our education initiatives—Oracle Academy and Oracle Education Foundation—help students develop the technical acumen and creative confidence to become the innovators of tomorrow. And, in 2015, Oracle made history by committing to build a home for Design Tech High School—a pioneering California public charter high school—on its headquarters campus.

Environmentally, Oracle is a leader in sustainability. We were recognized on CDP’s 2016 Climate A List, ranking us in the top 9 percent of companies globally in terms of transparency and performance, while Newsweek’s Green Rankings named Oracle #10 in the US and #17 in the world. In this report, we are also excited to release our new 2020 sustainability goals, which include a renewable energy target that raises the bar even higher.

Technologically, Oracle is committed to innovation, leadership, and excellence, and has invested more than US$45 billion in research and development since 2004. Under Oracle’s stewardship, Java has evolved into one of the most important and dependable technologies in our industry, and we continue to support future generations of Java developers and users. We actively develop products and services that help us run our business more sustainably and enable our customers do the same. Strong proponents of the circular economy, we recycled or reused 99.5 percent of electronic waste collected through our Take-Back and Recycling program in FY16.

Culturally, we continue to invest in our global workforce through employee development and engagement, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and health and wellness programs. Few places within the US offer the variety of resources that are available in the Bay Area–the Golden Gate Bridge, the surf at Santa Cruz, the slopes of Lake Tahoe, and the awe-inspiring Yosemite Valley. Oracle’s campus is located in the heart of Silicon Valley and features a full gym, coffee bars, several cafes, and outdoor sand volleyball court. Whether you like to work out, share experiences with colleagues over coffee or enjoy sightseeing, you’ll find it all in the Bay Area.

Career Development

Oracle has no career development plans for their engineering staff. No job rotation. After many years in the same positions, engineers may find their skills outdated. Once they get laid off by Oracle, they may find it difficult to find another jobs.

Overall compensation for your work

Oracle pays low salary to their existing staff, even though they may pay competitive salary to attract new hires. Engineer positions typically do not have stock options. Year-end bonuses are rare and very low.

Oracle recently adopted a flexible vacation policy. There is no accumulated vacation balance. Thus, employees have to take vacation as soon as possible, or else when the employment is involuntarily terminated, employees lost all vacation that they would have entitled to.

Office / Work Environment

Work environment of the Oracle HQ is good. But personal offices are very limited. Individual contributors have to work in cubicles or even work stations with little or no privacy.

Job Security

There are small but frequent layoffs at Oracle, for no apparent business reasons. (Since Oracle engineer salaries are notoriously low, layoffs may not save the company much money).

Moreover, layoff decisions are often made by managers many levels above the staff being laid off, without consultation with the first and second level managers.

Furthermore, before laying off there long-time workers, Oracle management does not seem to attempt to move them to other open positions in the company.

Challenging Work

This depends on the teams. Managers do take the initiative to give their staff new responsibilities and let them develop new skills.

What I like about the company

Work locations are near bus routes.

What I dislike about the company

low salaries; unreasonable layoffs.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Less competition between sales people and raises for good performance or raises in general after x amount of years.

What I like about the company

Management is excellent and you are able to learn a lot and grow.

What I dislike about the company

Lots of overlap with products/accounts in the sales department doesn't make for working together easy sometimes. Raises are not a thing no matter how above and beyond you go in your work even after performance reviews.
