Healthcare at my job was both a business and a service. We worked hard at providing good health are for the disadvantaged but were constantly being told to do it better. There were a lot of behind the scenes dealings to streamline costs and changes made that affected us in which we had no say whatsoever but were expected to comply without question. Very high turnover rate in staffing and really bad morale there.
Support from management
My manager was over stretched on duties. In my time there we had 4 different people do that job in the last 5 years I was there.
Freedom to work independently
Let us do our jobs but we never knew when management would show up and start criticizing us
Poor transparency between management and staff
Did equal pay across the board at my level. Can’t speak about other departments.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Had worked there 15 years and was age 57 at the time. A much younger person was hired at lower pay to replace me.
Not at my level
Overall compensation for your work
Made good money.
Office / Work Environment
Was getting skin reactions to something in air system.
Plastic wasted enormously. Shredded documents but no recycling available
My part-time job was eliminated because they wanted all employees to be full time.
Bad reputation in terms of union negotiation. Cutting costs to make money for shareholders
Strict standards for accreditation
Tried to work as a team and share the workload. Provider egos had to be considered first and foremost
Inclusive / Diverse
Good representation of LBGQ culture. Very few minorities
Suggestions for improvement
- This one is difficult to answer. There is no all encompassing suggestion or advice that will make it all better. Hierarchical structure of power within departments doesn’t seem to work well anymore.
What I like about the company
Good quality healthcare given to underserved populations. Committed people who innovate and go on to do things that make a difference. Participates in national initiatives to try and improve the way healthcare is delivered, ie social determinants of health studies.
What I dislike about the company
Lost focus on the people who do the dirty work. So many rules and regulations to comply with that the stress spills over into what should be a environment that people feel safe to express themselves. Made it hard to work together.
