Suggestions for improvement
- Change management and establish a clear employee policy manual. Consider the importance of work/life balance for the employees, or expect high turnover. Also look into the benefits of direct-deposit pay and retirement funds, even if the employer can not contribute.
What I like about the company
The actual work in a museum job is always fascinating. In an art museum, in particular, one can be exposed to a great deal of beauty and culture and I liked the variety of artwork and artifacts to which I was exposed. My duties were also personally satisfying, on balance. Pay was okay at first, but wages were frozen for all employees the last 7 years I worked there. Benefits were reasonably good (although no retirement), and life and health insurance was paid by the employer.
What I dislike about the company
Unfortunately, the management culture at this particular museum was toxic. They viewed every aspect of the employees' lives and well-being as being secondary to the museum. Hundreds of hours of after-hours (possibly over 1000; don't know since many 100s of comp time hours were lost every year) work were not compensated. They were able to impose these free labor hours legally, due to Kentucky's dismal labor laws. Nearly every single employee action was micro-managed, questioned, or approved of and then told to redo at the whims of the management. There existed no company policy handbook, and many rules and consequences were subject to abrupt change at the whims of two people in management. Often, many of these changes were not known to the employee until after the fact, often leaving the employee in untenable positions. Most definitely not recommended for anyone who wants clear rules to follow or wants any small semblance of work-life balance, especially family life. Staff meeting were rare, communication was poor, and all decisions affecting daily operations were made by two people, not always communicated with the rest of the staff.
