Awesome inter company relationships between employees.
Support from management
Tends to "crisis management" styles of leadership
Very reserved in communication between executive staff and store managers.
Absolute nepotism in upper level management reviews and pay scales.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Excellent towards long term employees, but very prejudiced against hiring older people.
There is no career development here. There are seminars every now and then, but they are more about promoting sales, and building good cashier-customer service. No management growth classes or offers for higher education exist within this company. No advancement is possible at the managerial level.
Overall compensation for your work
Yearly salary for managers is below national average, you have to fight for you 5 days of vacation a year, though you average working 60 plus hours a week. Insurance is available for management only, and is extremely third rate. No bonuses, no paid holidays, no time off for anything other than emergencies, unless you ask months in advance, and then it is subject to being cancelled days before because a cashier quit and short staffed the "company".
There is NO work life balance. You better be 100% expecting your life to revolve around the company, and there is no "give" to that rule.
Huge dollars spent on local image advertising, thereby giving the appearance of a great place to work. Not.
Job security for management is excellent, as long as you don't rock the boat, stay obedient, and don't miss any work, ever. Employees turnover is huge.
Safety is not an area that is well covered with this company, nor do they provide MSDS for chemicals used, nor do they train employee's or management how to react in emergency situations. They should since this is a company that sells huge amount of gasoline. There is no "official" training across the board, nor do they have "training stores" like most retailers, like 7-Eleven. No training on robbery, no how to handle being robbed. Just a few of the shortcomings in this area. Ninety percent of the employees don't even know how to use a fire extinguisher, nor where they are located in the stores.
The company as a whole is still in the 1980's technology wise, so a HUGE amount of time is spend administratively on paperwork and doing deposits.
Inclusive / Diverse
Diverse to a certain extent. Very LGBT friendly, but does not promote hiring of men to work counters.
Suggestions for improvement
- Quit worrying so much about "money" and start to actually care about your employees and their well being. If you spent as many funds growing your employees as you do taking vacations a year, it would be a much better place to work. Replace your old worn out mentality with newer ideas, free up managers to have a decent quality of life by installing modern computer systems to remove the mounds of paperwork, and PAY people a decent living wage for the sacrifices they make to make your company so "great". Your motto is on point: "Get it, Got it, Good". Yep, you "get" your employees life forces, you "got" they money in your bank account, and yes, your life is "Good".
What I like about the company
They give a hugely popular Christmas party every year, and the customers are what make it awesome to work for.
What I dislike about the company
Failure to follow through on promises made to management, no reviews for pay raises. I worked with them from 2007-2013 and only received two raises. One for $25 a week, and the other for $50 a week, and the latter only because I was relocated to brand new store. The extremely LONG hours and hard physical labor required of managers. Some of the stores require during holidays that managers put in 15-20 hour days, and return after 4-6 hours for a shift just as long. There is no exception to this. Your salary does not balance with the amount of hours you spend at work. When you bring this up, you are told about "how lucky you are to have a job when so few don't". Veiled threats alluding to being fired, or just quit, you're replaceable.
