Monthly meetings to develop your skills as a teacher was great, but good communication with Japanese teachers is a must for success. Many of mine were great, some were a little more challenging to work with.
My immediate supervisor and the company head office were always available and willing to help when you needed it. Once again, though rarely for me, communications with some of the Japanese teachers who share the same schools with you could be challenging. Some other teachers had it worse than I did, but my Japanese co-workers at my assigned schools were great.
Office / Work Environment
This one varies depending on the different school locations. Some are really nice and easy to commute too, others a little more run down and hard to get to via public transportation.
Average 5-6 hours a day depending on your schedule. On average I taught 3-4 lessons at 1 hour each a day. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Having all morning and early afternoon off was nice. 2 weeks of vacation AND days off for Japanese Holidays, I loved the work-life balance.
This one varies depending on your students. Some of my students were amazing and it made me enjoy what I was doing. Others might be challenging to teach. And being the only teacher in the classroom most of the time can lead to some issues, as it had with me a couple of times.
Suggestions for improvement
- While my designated classrooms were all acceptable and good, some of the classrooms I had to travel to weren't nearly as nice. Sometimes it's the teachers who normally have the classroom who don't take care of it like they should. Other times PKC pick a location that's less than encouraging to be in.
What I like about the company
It provided an opportunity to live in and explore Japan. It's a living/work experience I loved and will never forget. And have, at times, wonder if I left too early.
What I dislike about the company
Sometimes the students can be an issue, and being the only teacher in the room can make it challenging to handle certain issues. And sometimes you are required, at a moments notice to travel LONG distances to cover for other teachers. I wish we might of had more advanced notice for that, but sometimes things happen, and you are are selected to travel, sometimes a long way to cover.
