Company Culture

I only worked there for a short time as I transfered from another state. As soon as I got there it was nothing but drugs and parting. This is not something I can condone when working with other peoples animals

Support from management

NO

Teamwork

They all assume that everyone likes the same things they do, and does not know how to seperate work from life

Freedom to work independently

To dependently to the point that animal care can come last

Internal Communication

I was never informed on how well the store was preforming or allowed to review survey results from customers

Career Development

You only get to move up if someone leaves, there is no preperation training to take you the next step in the business

Overall compensation for your work

You make min-wage, and are offered to make some commision but you never see the pay out no matter how hard you work. There was always a loop hole so they would not have to pay you the extra money. When the change pay's you are not notified

Office / Work Environment

Yes, the place needs a deep cleaning as there are some places that need extra work that an employee could not provide

Environmental Friendliness

recycling is unheard of in Arizona

Work-Life Balance

had a set shift and hardly ever called to come in on days off or early

Company Image

I recently just left I could not be part of the people working there, bring drugs into work and making sells is unbelievable

Job Security

Everyone is replaceable

Workplace Safety

I have never recieved any training on how to prevent accidents. Being in the grooming salon I would think that this would be covered the first week of employment

Challenging Work

Dog Grooming can be challenging at some times with big dogs, or little ones that like to bite

Inclusive / Diverse

When hired on I was informed that they do not hire people with familys as they are unreliable

Suggestions for improvement

  • The environment I was subject to was all about partying. This is not something I want to hear while working. I would have liked to see more involvement from the store leader and the Animal Care leader in the grooming salon. I believe with there presence the internment would have been more appealing to work in. Also, if you change the pay structure for the groomers inform them of the change before the policy hits so we know what we can except to receive.

What I like about the company

The animals are fun and exciting to play with. Being able to share different ideas and cuts for the dogs, allowed some people to try something new that they feel in love with. Being able to take an old dog and make them look like a puppy can be so rewarding. There are times that you get to see a breed of dog that you may not have been able to see before because of their rarity.

What I dislike about the company

I would have liked to see more time spent with the dogs, as there are times where we are just pushing dogs out at a lower quality of work. I would also like to see more interaction with the production floor managers in the grooming salon as 10 min checks are required by the animal care leader, but not once did they come in for a wellness check on the animals we had in the salon

Company Culture

I feel out of step with the younger ones but the older folks and the managers I seem to fit in.

Support from management

Management does the best they can to help me sell classes, but they do not make employees available to attend my classes while they are on the clock. An employees knowledge about what happens in a training class will help them sell classes.

Teamwork

It sometimes feels that there is indifference to communicate with each other. I have never worked with so many coworkers that will not share any thoughts.

Freedom to work independently

At my current location, some of the managers are very rigid and are really too critical. This is because there is a district manager that is very condescending and demeaning to them.

Internal Communication

It always seems that I'm out of the loop or receive information that is old news.

Gender Equality

It appears that women are treated fairly, but I would have to talk to a woman to see how she feels.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Not very different from most companies in dealing with older worker. We are sometimes treated as if we were stupid because we may be in our 50's and working in a low paying retail environment.

Career Development

Not for someone that works part-time, low wage and older workers.

Overall compensation for your work

Absolutely not, generally retail employers pay poor wages and hold them to strict standards like a CEO. Employees should do the best job they can but management should look employees more for working a generally thankless job.

Office / Work Environment

I am training in such a small space with barriers that have been falling apart for months. Pieced together with duct tape and doesn't look professional.

Environmental Friendliness

Can do better but there is some recycling of some materials.

Work-Life Balance

Since I'm part-time, I am able to put my work behind me.

Company Image

I feel that since I am part-time, I am limited in advancement.

Job Security

I am good at my job and it costs to train new people for my position.

Handicapped Accessibility

Some aisles are a little narrow for wheelchairs and walkers and some items are on high shelves.

Workplace Safety

This is an area that is run well. We are trained extensively on how to safely work.

Challenging Work

I sometimes have to do research for dog training, but the most challenging part of the job is the lack of mentally stimulating activities. I'm too old and am easily bored with everyday tasks.

Inclusive / Diverse

Corporate offices are very rigid on how the store is organized, there seems to be no input from store manager on how to do things in our store.

Suggestions for improvement

  • In short we need higher wages, a friendlier work environment, and much improved store security. Higher wages will help us feel more appreciated. Higher wages would reduce turnover which will reduce the cost of training and increase sales. Starting at corporate, employees need to be treated with more value and respect. Finally is store security. It seems that Petco is more concerned with employee theft than shoplifters and vagrants. Security cameras are focused more on the cash register and anywhere money is visible. Because we are understaffed at the busiest times and store leaders tend to be in the office or the back of the store, shoplifters here are brazen enough to walk out of the store with big bags of dog food and other merchandise. Sometime it is a customer that tells us because we are so busy that we can't notice it. More cameras and hiring at least one security guard will probably curb theft quite a bit.

What I like about the company

I have enjoyed working for Petco. I have been with Petco for nearly four years and have the opportunity to transfer to other stores and other regions. The customers tend to be friendlier than with other retailers that I have worked for. My background in Greyhound Rescue has allowed me to do a better job. I do feel appreciated and well liked.

What I dislike about the company

Like most retailers and corporations, the lower you are on the totem pole, the worse that you are treated. Store leaders, in my opinion, are treated terribly by district managers on their visits to the store. Many of the district managers didn't move up through the ranks at Petco so they have no idea about working pragmatically with store operations and customer service. There is no latitude in organizing the store. Someone at corporate designs a planagram to stock the store. Corporate doesn't seem to have a clue on what it's like to work in a store.

The following perks were offered to me

Employee discounts is offered Pet friendly/Pets allowed is offered

Company Culture

It all starts with the manager, the manager sets the culture. In all at my location people get along well, very laid back, but the problem we have is people doing their jobs and doing them properly.

Support from management

For the most part yes. It all depends on the lead manager and their managment skills.

Teamwork

As long as there is not a click/ highschool culture, this is a great company to work for in terms of working alongside other co-workers

Freedom to work independently

Very much trusts that you can work alone, so much so they give you a armful of things that cant all possibly be finished in time by one person alone.

Internal Communication

For the most part you will know if you have done something right or wrong, the issue is the consistantcy.

Gender Equality

Yes. Most definatly.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Yes but this depends on reliability and work history. Managerial wise it offers great opportunity

Career Development

Always room to grow if you show potential. I started at low entry level and am now a top rated manager

Overall compensation for your work

Company does not pay enough to keep the hard working emplyees. The pay is really minimal and not a good living.

Office / Work Environment

Out of date technology for the most part. Building maintenece is an issue and repairs are not done in a timely manner or done at all.

Environmental Friendliness

Some proceedures in place like low lighting but very wasteful

Work-Life Balance

Depends what area you work in and if you are fully staffed which 70/100 you are not.

Company Image

I am proud for many things but equally dissatisfied with others

Job Security

Ive worked my way up to the top with alot of hard work that shows. I have proved hard to replace.

Handicapped Accessibility

Always handicap accessible

Workplace Safety

Lots of videos and introduction. Policy and proceedure driven

Challenging Work

The biggest challenge is keeping up with new changes, in this environment its always changing and evolving, never boring. Another challenge would be getting all your daily tasks while at the same time assisting guests within a certain amount of time.

Inclusive / Diverse

This is a yes. Although you still have a strict policy and proceedure for handling things.

Suggestions for improvement

  • More restriction on a store manager and implememt employee driven reviews to evaluate their progress. The biggest issue is the store manager creates the culture and if the culture is bad good people jump ship and there is alot of turn over. Raise the pay grade so you can keep good people so they will want to stay. Lots of little things like this.

What I like about the company

Great oppotunities to move up. Friendly warm environment. Animal friendly environment makes it easy to connect with the customer and form great relationships. Lots of time and money spent on tools and training to make it easier to help build yourself and excell. Opportunities to make goals and recieve bonuses. Paid time off, sick leave, and now pet bereavement. 401k match, great health insurance dental and vision, car insurance discounts, and met life insurance. Easy going environment, safe environment, non discriminative. Paid for meetings and seminars when applicible. Great employee discounts. New CEO that is implementing a more employee favored work environment and creating a more forward thinking culture. Many different areas to work and grow within the company.

What I dislike about the company

Our technology is still dated. Pay is below average. Work load is heavy with lots of understaffing. We are not providided with the facilities to preform our jobs like lack of building care a inappropiate time for fixing issues. Can be very political within the ranks and most of the time the best employees are not valued for their hard work. Lots of clicks within the ranks and abuse of power or promoting based on relationships and not job driven work. No clear communication with company outside of store like having a work order processed and completed properly.
