What employees say

Employees like

Personal growth encouraged, learning encouraged, constant interaction with customers provided valuable experiences that showed me to be a better resource for future customers. Would love to work for this company again.
I enjoyed being the aquatics specialist for the time I was there and my boss was great
The animals are fun and exciting to play with. Being able to share different ideas and cuts for the dogs, allowed some people to try something new that they feel in love with. Being able to take an old dog and make them look like a puppy can be so rewarding. There are times that you get to see a breed of dog that you may not have been able to see before because of their rarity.
Getting acquainted with new animals.
a lot of higher ups actually seem to care about employees and i really like that. it makes me feel more welcome there

Employees don't like

There's so much corruption at the store level and the lack of enthusiasm by so-called leaders to promote from within the store. Plus corporate is always downsizing benefits and does nothing to improve on salaries.
When everything is running well and the store is performing and they bring in new DM that wants to "fix" a culture that isn't broken.
If the higher ups don't like you they make it difficult to want to stay with the company
Not environmentally friendly (excessive use of plastics)
Many training modules are outdated and have a lot of discrepancies
Unrealistic expectations of employees (lack of appropriate payroll, insufficient time to complete tasks such as maintenance and pre-opening tasks)
Continually rearranging stores and confusing/frustrating customers by moving their products to different locations within the store
Emailed coupons never work and the cashier's get faulted for it by customers
Slow to non-existent response time to upper level management inquiries about time sensitive matters
Our technology is still dated. Pay is below average. Work load is heavy with lots of understaffing. We are not providided with the facilities to preform our jobs like lack of building care a inappropiate time for fixing issues. Can be very political within the ranks and most of the time the best employees are not valued for their hard work. Lots of clicks within the ranks and abuse of power or promoting based on relationships and not job driven ...

Suggestions for improvement

Stop ditching all of the associate's benefits all the time. Stop hiring corrupt managers or at least police them when an associate calls human resources only to wind up being antagonized.
This company always wants more from YOU but never gives anything in return. They take advantage of your loyalty to co workers.
The environment I was subject to was all about partying. This is not something I want to hear while working. I would have liked to see more involvement from the store leader and the Animal Care leader in the grooming salon. I believe with there presence the internment would have been more appealing to work in. Also, if you change the pay structure for the groomers inform them of the change before the policy hits so we know what we ...
get rid of tiny half gallon betta tanks. get rid of dog and cat food with tons of corn and wheat in them. listen to employees about animal habitats and what needs to change.
Company could use more team building acTivities and events, employees work closely together bit don't really have any way to learn about one another.

Best and worst factors

Best rated: Gender Equality

The best rated factor of Petco is Gender Equality with 3.7 points (based on 34 reviews).

our location is all women except one man
Offers jobs to men in preference to women
I never felt I was treated unfair
Men and women treated equal
It appears that women are treated fairly, but I would have to talk to a woman to see how she feels.

Worst rated: Overall compensation for your work

The worst rated factor of Petco is Overall compensation for your work with 2.7 points (based on 45 reviews).

You make min-wage, and are offered to make some commision but you never see the pay out no matter how hard you work. There was always a loop hole so they would not have to pay you the extra money. When the change pay's you are not notified
i've been there long enough i shouldn't make minimum wage.
Could use a raise, not bad for retail pay
Absolutely not, generally retail employers pay poor wages and hold them to strict standards like a CEO. Employees should do the best job they can but management should look employees more for working a generally thankless job.
Terrible. Everyone is underpaid and they refuse to give out raises and they make it incredibly difficult to get promoted

Career Development

Career Development rating

Career Development is rated with an average of 3.0 points (based on 39 reviews).

Managers pick and choose who they like more to move up over people who've shown more commitment. Most could care less about employee's careers.
Training offered for grooming salon and advancement, company offers compensation
You only get to move up if someone leaves, there is no preperation training to take you the next step in the business
Always room to grow if you show potential. I started at low entry level and am now a top rated manager
I feel like I could be offered more opportunities.
