A majority of promotions are based on political connections

Support from management

Employees have a little input.

Only teamwork is in squad or committee.

Freedom to work independently

Employees workload varies. So employees do less work.

Internal Communication

There is no communication from command staff level to immediate supervisors. Employees know information before supervisors. Last minute notification has become the standard.

Gender Equality

Women promotions compared to men favor women.

Attitude towards older colleagues

The city hires a wide age range. However, the city under values all employees. They have the plug and play atmosphere. Anyone can be replaced.

Career Development

Personal development is unknown. There is supposed to be a change but none scene yet.

Overall compensation for your work

Benefits are standard with most employers. Wages are 12% below cola from 20-25 years ago. Wages are about 20 to 25 % below top paying police departments. These departments have far less opportunities for injury & far less workload & officers can make more money.

Office / Work Environment

Most buildings are in need of repair. Air condtioning goes out in buildings frequently. Repairs take to long. 3 to 5 times longer than private sector and it is after work is approve.

Environmental Friendliness

The city is trying to go with environment buildings. Going green. Police facilities only measure of enviroment concern are motion sensor lighting.

Work-Life Balance

Pay is below average. Low pay forces officers to work overtime. Public schools have all the resources to excel but no discipline. Employees are forced to send children to private schools. 10,000 to 24,000 a year. Workload is always increasing. This is do to restructing & lack of vision.

Company Image

Employees dislike the city. Morale cannot get lower then it goes lower. City does little to support a good working environment.

Job Security

Job security use to be high. However, with working long hours to support you family & being away from family leads to a stressful environment. You are 1 call away from losing your job.

Challenging Work

The work varies from day to day. However, due to courts & corrections high recidivism rates so prepare yourself.

Inclusive / Diverse

Diversity is preached. However, the increase in 60 college credit hours had lowered diversity even though this was changed after the ACLU lawsuit. City realized through the process education helped with liability.

Suggestions for improvement

  • A new mayor. This mayor has single handidly crushed morale. He has labeled the police as mediocre at best & corrupt. Fire department retire at what a cop makes yearly. Medics get paid time and a half after 8 hours police do not.

What I like about the company

People i work with and supervise. Only the military is close.

What I dislike about the company

Wages. Pension. Paying more for benefits which were once free. Losing personal/sick days was at 14 now down to 3 (pending).
