Company Culture

Most employees don't really trust management when they promised something. There always seems to be a hidden agenda or some other strings attached. Usually the only time we hear from management and supervisors on a regular basis is when there's a problem.

Support from management

Management seems to want employees' input but often appear not to listen to our suggestions. Too many departments needing things done, with each claiming priority. No one seems to step up to take responsibility for what is prioritized so sometimes work just piles up undone.

Teamwork

Some employees are great and will go out of their way to help you, but most are only interested in doing only what they are assigned to or at worst, the bare minimum. Some will even sit back and slack off while watching a co-worker nearby is struggling to get something done.

Freedom to work independently

Referencing back to the "bare minimum" workers mentioned earlier: Instead of taking the situation as an teaching opportunity, management usually just shifts the extra duties to someone else who is a harder worker, and "rewards" their hard work with additional job duties.

Internal Communication

Communication concerning company successes and profit-affecting situations are always relayed to employees in a timely manner. Information that might affect job performance or requirements to complete our work efficiently is usually not passed along very well.

Gender Equality

Women seem to be given the same opportunities as men with this company. There are not many women in this company compare to male employees. Until a few years ago, there were no women working at this location except those that were in administration.

Attitude towards older colleagues

The company seems to value young, fresh-out-of-college prospects. We don't usually see any seniors being hired, but perhaps there aren't that many that are seeking any of the available job positions. Those of us that have been with the company a long time don't feel like we're appreciated for our longevity or experience.

Career Development

Overall career development and advancement is generally poor. Most employees stay locked into whatever job they started with. Most "promotions" actually end up being lateral moves (more job responsibilities with little or no increase in pay).

Overall compensation for your work

Compensation is fairly good in the current economy but is probably not on the same level as similar jobs with other companies. Benefits offered are good, including medical and dental, 401k, and vacation time. There are no allowances for sick days. Salaries are always paid in a timely manner.

Office / Work Environment

Plant is noisy in some areas (which is to be expected in manufacturing). A lot of the working spaces seem to have been designed as a kind of afterthought (just sufficient to get the job done).

Environmental Friendliness

For the most part, Porocel seems to be concerned about following EPA and local regulations concerning the material we use and produce. Although at times there are hazardous materials left spilled on the ground that management and employees fail to clean up properly.

Work-Life Balance

This category depends on what kind of life you lead. Most positions (except management, administrative and others on straight day shifts) are rotating 12 hours shifts, which can be hard on families and makes it difficult or impossible to attend school while working such a schedule. Sometimes, when employees are short-handed, the overtime to cover these positions can become excessive.

Company Image

This doesn't really seem to be the type of company that most employees go home and brag about. The general public is usually unaware of the products and materials we produce.

Job Security

Job security is good. We don't usually lose individuals unless they quit or are terminated.

Handicapped Accessibility

Other than possibly adminstrative jobs, there are no positions at this company that can really be performed effectively by disabled individuals. The only ramps that exist are ones used by forklifts to access warehouses.

Workplace Safety

Overall the company seems to adhere to most OSHA regulations and computer based training is done on a monthly basis. Yet management seems unable to completely eliminate workplace accidents.

Challenging Work

This depends on the individual. I personally always get a sense of accomplishment simply by performing my job as well as I can. Sometimes management doesn't seem to care about product quality as much as they should, so this can give a feeling of frustration if you care about it.

Inclusive / Diverse

Most employees believe that management mostly wants you to think and feel like they do.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Any improvement to the previous categories discussed would be a good start.

What I like about the company

Fairly good pay, good job security and good benefits.

What I dislike about the company

Overall lack of communication and caring with both management and employees. Poor performing employees are given the same pay and opportunities as good performing employees.
