Support from management
Management elements were semi-dysfunctional in supporting high achievers in difficult situations, tending to rely too heavily on bureaucratic administrators insulated from profit/loss situations.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Observed at least one instance, maybe two where successful senior managers were let go for nebulous reasons. The resulting vacuums were not effectively mitigated.
OJT development and growth is all that is provided in reality.
Overall compensation for your work
Pay was good and bonuses can be good but seemed to be erratically parceled out with no feed back.
Has a good image with many customers - based on results.
Job security is typical for a firm largely dependent upon government contracts. Portage tries hard to retain its employees when times are tough.

Suggestions for improvement
- Reward productive employees with a financial stake in the company. This had been announced but never occurred.
What I like about the company
Portage had a very good business development focus which produced great opportunity for staff willing to work away from the home office. Being a small business, it was relatively easy to get ownership involvement and support for necessary decisions and actions.
What I dislike about the company
Portage was too risk averse, tending to rely too heavily on maintaining bureaucratic status-quo rather than supporting innovation.
