Suggestions for improvement
- They need to bring in a third party, outside firm to actually "run" the district and hire all new staff for the district office positions. The nepotism and cronyism has to stop or RPS will never improve. There are people in positions for which they are only marginally (if that) qualified because they are someone's auntie or cousin or daughter or friend of a friend.
On the school level, the amount of paperwork, planning, and "add-on" activities for teachers is impossible to keep up with if you have any kind of life outside the school. Single people with no social life whatsoever and workaholic personalities are the only people who can survive effectively. I've known people who have had to choose between his/her spouse and the job. I've known teachers who put off having children of their own because they would have neither time nor energy to care for a family. I've known teachers who have paid outside entities to correct papers and organize data. I have known more than one teacher who has had to leave because of deteriorating health directly related to their teach experience,
Finally, school needs to stop being about testing and start being about the business of teaching.
What I like about the company
My former assistant principle would pray with me in her office on difficult days. She made life bearable.
A former principle was willing to do whatever it took to make our school successful, though it wasn't.
A former school in which I taught within thedistrict had a group of mature, affable, mostly competent teachers and staff who would band together in times of trouble and did not try to get ahead by stepping on others. We were there to do the right thing for the children. Unfortunately, that strong group of professionals was separated when the school was closed a few years ago due to the crumbling infrastructure of the building -- it was not safe for children or adults..
