Suggestions for improvement
- I would improve the environment by enforcing more housekeeping responsibilities and more hours housekeeping can be available in the building. As a previous manager, I always made sure my staff felt appreciated, valued and safe. I would encourage the management at my work to provide the same ethics. This would greatly help staff retention and morale.
What I like about the company
I enjoy the people I work with. The patient acuity level is fair when properly staffed. The government benefits are great. Most new management are trying to improve the facility and workplace. All supplies and equipment needed to take care of the patients are readily available, which is usually rare in LTC facilities. Having a nurse as a shift supervisor that is always on, acting as the charge nurse, is helpful in long term care.
What I dislike about the company
Staffing ratios are poor, but this is currently a problem everywhere in health care. Staff, the really good staff, should get more recognition and credit for all that we do. Compensation is average, not the lowest in the area, but it’s not great. New LPNs are making more than new/old RNs, which is inappropriate due to the more advanced skills RNs can perform. The patient units are never cleaned. Housekeeping does not go on any of the floors care is given on or the patients rooms. The floors are always dirty, increasing the population of bugs and mice. Many areas are covered in dust. Every patient unit is kept at at least 80 degrees. Understandable to keep it warmer for elderly, but staff and other patients have increased health problems and extreme discomfort due to the excessive heat. For being such a large facility, there could be more variety and more frequent activities for the patients. Many are bored and have increased behavioral issues because of the lack of stimulation and socialization.
