Suggestions for improvement
- The department has a choice in regards to how it manages the defendants and minors under supervision. The department can emphasize the law enforcement style of supervision with an emphasis on punishment or it can emphasize the rehabilitation style of supervision with an emphasis on restorative justice. Management has pursued the current trend in rehabilitation-based supervision which demands personnel engage in directing defendants and minors into programs meant to foment individual change and monitoring their success or failure. Defendants are provided multiple opportunities at program participation and moderately sanctioned for compliance failure. An emphasis on swift-and-sure punishment to ensure compliance with all aspects of supervision would empower the probation officer who is to be afforded all due respect. Smaller caseloads and an emphasis on specialized caseloads would provide officers with the opportunity to use their training, skills, knowledge, and abilities to better affect change and concentrate on the diverse needs of an at-risk population.
What I like about the company
Numerous and diverse assignments involving criminal investigations, law enforcement, rehabilitation programs, and supervising defendants in the community. I have been able to use my education along with my personal knowledge, skills, and abilities to affect change in defendants and minors who have returned to the community under probation supervision. Further, I have become a seasoned investigator providing detailed sentencing reports to the court. Lastly, I have become a seasoned court officer who has worked in the courtroom with judges, attorneys, and court clerks to ensure defendants receive due process and appropriate outcomes, which may include state prison, realigned sentences, or probation supervision. As a thoroughly experienced staff member, I am tasked with training new staff on various facets of the job to ensure all date entry, reports, and paperwork are true and correct.
What I dislike about the company
Although the department offers a substantial pension beginning at age 50, the value of that pension has been reduced for new hires, which makes the job less attractive. Further, wages have been depressed, meritorious step increases reduced, and top wages capped for all employees except senior executive management. A hiring freeze has left a number of positions uncovered and required extra support from staff who must also care for their caseload. Lastly, department and office politics can affect promotional opportunities.
