- S. Carpenter Construction Company, Inc15.Dec 2015
This is the area where the company failed the most. It was sink or swim and we heard the negative but seldom the positive.
Support from management
There was very little involvement in any decisions unless it was actually your job. Important tasks were centrally controlled in spite of the talents of other employees. Only less important and routine tasks were delegated.
About average. Some did and some didn't.
Freedom to work independently
The company is run as a dictatorship. There is really no autonomy.
Attitude towards older colleagues
The work force was mainly older. There was a core of long tenured employees.
They mostly hired established, experienced workers. Only a couple people were early in their career and learning. There was no formal training, just learn on the job.
Overall compensation for your work
The salary was enough to live on and some of the carpenters and plumbers made quite a good living especially on municipal or certified payroll jobs. While I was there all payrolls were paid on time, though there were always cash flow issues. The health insurance, however, was prohibitively expensive and not a great plan. One of the pitfalls of a small company.
Office / Work Environment
The physical atmosphere was casual and comfortable. As a small, older company, a lot of things were not up to date.
Not in a proactive way but they followed laws and compliance regulations.
The hours were fine. There was no formal vacation policy at all. Paid time off was at managements discretion on a case by case basis.
Yes, as a Commercial Real Estate Co all facilities were compliant.
A few people seemed to have job security, but it didn't take much to get fired. I felt like they were looking for my replacement the whole time I was there.
Not sure about actual safety training per se, but I don't know of any issues.
Yes and no. Some of the work was challenging and gave me a sense of accomplishment, but it never felt recognized or appreciated.
Inclusive / Diverse
The company has a lot of room to improve in this area.
