Suggestions for improvement

  • Overall Safeway does a good job at ensuring their employees thrive but sometimes the individuals are lost in the big picture due to the company being so large. Maybe they can find a way to make the little people feel more connected into the big picture as opposed to just being the little people doing the grunt work while the big people argue over the methods and materials they must use to do it.

What I like about the company

Safeway is an equal-opportunity employer and hires a variety of people from different ways of life and religions, all ages and ethnicities, disabled and not, and of all sexual orientations. Each store is like a family and we all help each other grow and mature. Each department is a team that works together to reach goals as a store and everyone has to work together to achieve said goals. If you show progress and willingness to be cross-trained in another position or department, management is really willing to let you explore different positions and hours as long as you stay efficient in all positions. This is nice because it allows you to broaden your skill set easily and explore different interests while still only having to work one job. When working at Safeway you learn quickly and well how to communicate with customers and coworkers and also become very skilled at problem solving. Because of the vastness of this company, location is not a problem so you can easily transfer stores if you need to move and transferring to acquire a different position is also possible. Every employee is technically part time but has the opportunity to work up to 40 hrs a week depending on seniority and skill-set and availability and need. Safeway offers benefits even without getting close to 40 hrs a week. I especially like that the employees are a part of an assortment of unions, depending on their department and position, which allows for job security in a harsh economy and the opportunity to learn from mistakes instead of being out of a job because of them. Overall, Safeway is a great company to work for if you're interested in retail/ customer service work or just interested in becoming a better employee in whatever field you choose to pursue afterwards.

What I dislike about the company

Sometimes there's disagreements when it comes to how much money employees should be making based off of their job title. I haven't personally been affected by that but I know plenty of people who have. That is the only problem with being part of a union: it protects your job but it also places you on a pay scale that doesn't really allow for real raises. I disapprove of some managers building employees up and promising them better positions if they have no intentions or room to actually follow through with said promises. It is based off of the individual manager but it seems like as a whole the company tends to make empty promises to encourage better work from employees.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Safeway needs to offer better benefits and retirement options again, as well as the same holiday and overtime pay that the old contract has. It is unfair that there are 2 separate contracts. Management needs more training on how to actually run their stores properly and deal with employees. Stop hiring people who are unfit for employment. Most of the employees at the stores now are lazy and try to get away with doing nothing and yet are still being paid, leaving the people who care to do all the work.

What I like about the company

Many of the other employees you work with at Safeway are generally enjoyable people. The nature of the work in a grocery is not hard, it is just very physical and labor intensive.

What I dislike about the company

I held the title of produce manager for a time and that was more work than it was worth. Many of the ''old timer'' employees make more than anyone else, including department managers. The company has 2 different ''contracts'' through the union, anyone hired now will be on what they call the ''new contract'' and benefits and pay suck. The old contract has a lot more perks including 401k matching, Pension benefits, and holidays and overtime pay that we on the new contract do not receive. Management treats everyone like garbage and most of the work is unevenly distributed, meaning the department heads tend to take the blame for everything wrong, and take on most of the work load. If you get hurt at all they try to blame you and make it out to be your fault instead of being concerned for your well-being. There are too many head honchos and not enough worker bees, corporate comes and complains every other week at my store. Overall this company is joke. Don't work here.

Company Culture

The only reason I'm still here is because I like the majority of my co-workers and we can have fun working together.

Support from management

The only support is from our assistant manager who does their best to get done what ever needs to be done. With them, there's always an open line of communication.

Teamwork

There's always a bad apple or two but for the most part, team work and communication is never lacking.

Freedom to work independently

Almost nonexistent since our manager expects orders done immediately instead of helping customers so we can get it done. We don't really work independently so much as we scramble to get everything done with less time to do it. The manager doesn't fight for us.

Internal Communication

Manager of department doesn't care about solving problems, just placing blame on a scape goat. The assistant manager has the respect of all who work there.

Gender Equality

Men don't last long where I work. The few that were there, moved on to other departments leaving the hens behind. I don't blame them. But I'd like some more guys there to balance out all the estrogen and emotion. More logical minds please.

Attitude towards older colleagues

I try to give respect where it's due. After all, they have lived longer than me and seen more. With the exception of 2, the general attitude towards older coworkers is friendly and we work well.

Career Development

Unless you want to go to Safeway school and learn how to be a better baker or a manager, or be a daprtment manager youself, it will take years before you get the opportunity to shine. You can start by taking on more responsibility at work, but how would you have time for your growing family then? Or what about important events you have to go to like college? Too bad, we need you to come in and you are the only one to pick up the phone. You signed up for this.

Overall compensation for your work

Back pain, no tips from management to maybe make things easier, and a few of us get called in on our days off because someone messed up on writing the schedule. And that last one is in a regular basis. The only reward is when someone buys cupcakes or doughnuts or drinks from Starbucks for us, as if that's going to take away our pain and stress.

Office / Work Environment

Regular cuatomers and a good team make my day and there's nothing negative to talk about. But when we have a rush and two people in the counter, it is very stressful. One co-worker already went to the hospital in an ambulance twice because of the anxiety. In a place where we are left to fend for ouselves on a regular basis, the environment suffers greatly. When that happens so does a bit of our customer service suffer. People start walking away and I del horrible for t getting to them faster. But I'm only human.

Environmental Friendliness

Most of our co-workers and customers are wonderful. Friendly and regular, we get to know them and help them in their daily routine. Some of my customers will even wait for me to serve them instead of letting a co-worker serve them. My co-workers and I have good work relationship. Even if we don't get along all time. We are mature enough to not make a scene in front of the customer.

Work-Life Balance

Stress is brought home and has caused my spouse to say I need another job. I've cried because of my job and it's emotionally killing me.

Job Security

Being the only Safeway on Whidbey Island, our job security is very good. We have the military base in town and it's a retirement community. If anything, our job security has grown. With all the military squadrons coming and going we always meet new people and we have the opportunity to connect.

Handicapped Accessibility

Besides only having two stalls in the restroom and one being for the handicapped, we try help those who have trouble. A lot of my co-workers will come round the counter to hand something to a customer who is handicapped, than have them get up and reach for something.

Workplace Safety

Working in a deli, no matter how many safety rules you put in place there's always a small burn here, or a cut there. Having dry skin doesn't help. When washing hands I find a new crack in my skin every other day. We clean the floors the best we can but sometimes I still slip. I catch myself every time but someone should make better slip resistant shoes.

Challenging Work

Every day is a new challenge of how on earth are we going to get by this time? We have this many people to do this many tasks while helping this many customers while this piece of equipment isn't working still and now another has broken down. If you like the sound of this, come work for Safeway.

Inclusive / Diverse

Diverse in culture maybe but we could use a few more guys. We need more men that have a good work ethic and sense of humor. Its just less emotionally draining that way.

What I like about the company

The health insurance and $3000 my spouse and kids will get if I pass away accidentally while working.

What I dislike about the company

Almost everything from my department manager to corporate.
