Suggestions for improvement
- Overall Safeway does a good job at ensuring their employees thrive but sometimes the individuals are lost in the big picture due to the company being so large. Maybe they can find a way to make the little people feel more connected into the big picture as opposed to just being the little people doing the grunt work while the big people argue over the methods and materials they must use to do it.
What I like about the company
Safeway is an equal-opportunity employer and hires a variety of people from different ways of life and religions, all ages and ethnicities, disabled and not, and of all sexual orientations. Each store is like a family and we all help each other grow and mature. Each department is a team that works together to reach goals as a store and everyone has to work together to achieve said goals. If you show progress and willingness to be cross-trained in another position or department, management is really willing to let you explore different positions and hours as long as you stay efficient in all positions. This is nice because it allows you to broaden your skill set easily and explore different interests while still only having to work one job. When working at Safeway you learn quickly and well how to communicate with customers and coworkers and also become very skilled at problem solving. Because of the vastness of this company, location is not a problem so you can easily transfer stores if you need to move and transferring to acquire a different position is also possible. Every employee is technically part time but has the opportunity to work up to 40 hrs a week depending on seniority and skill-set and availability and need. Safeway offers benefits even without getting close to 40 hrs a week. I especially like that the employees are a part of an assortment of unions, depending on their department and position, which allows for job security in a harsh economy and the opportunity to learn from mistakes instead of being out of a job because of them. Overall, Safeway is a great company to work for if you're interested in retail/ customer service work or just interested in becoming a better employee in whatever field you choose to pursue afterwards.
What I dislike about the company
Sometimes there's disagreements when it comes to how much money employees should be making based off of their job title. I haven't personally been affected by that but I know plenty of people who have. That is the only problem with being part of a union: it protects your job but it also places you on a pay scale that doesn't really allow for real raises. I disapprove of some managers building employees up and promising them better positions if they have no intentions or room to actually follow through with said promises. It is based off of the individual manager but it seems like as a whole the company tends to make empty promises to encourage better work from employees.
