The only reason I'm still here is because I like the majority of my co-workers and we can have fun working together.
Support from management
The only support is from our assistant manager who does their best to get done what ever needs to be done. With them, there's always an open line of communication.
There's always a bad apple or two but for the most part, team work and communication is never lacking.
Freedom to work independently
Almost nonexistent since our manager expects orders done immediately instead of helping customers so we can get it done. We don't really work independently so much as we scramble to get everything done with less time to do it. The manager doesn't fight for us.
Manager of department doesn't care about solving problems, just placing blame on a scape goat. The assistant manager has the respect of all who work there.
Men don't last long where I work. The few that were there, moved on to other departments leaving the hens behind. I don't blame them. But I'd like some more guys there to balance out all the estrogen and emotion. More logical minds please.
Attitude towards older colleagues
I try to give respect where it's due. After all, they have lived longer than me and seen more. With the exception of 2, the general attitude towards older coworkers is friendly and we work well.
Unless you want to go to Safeway school and learn how to be a better baker or a manager, or be a daprtment manager youself, it will take years before you get the opportunity to shine. You can start by taking on more responsibility at work, but how would you have time for your growing family then? Or what about important events you have to go to like college? Too bad, we need you to come in and you are the only one to pick up the phone. You signed up for this.
Overall compensation for your work
Back pain, no tips from management to maybe make things easier, and a few of us get called in on our days off because someone messed up on writing the schedule. And that last one is in a regular basis. The only reward is when someone buys cupcakes or doughnuts or drinks from Starbucks for us, as if that's going to take away our pain and stress.
Office / Work Environment
Regular cuatomers and a good team make my day and there's nothing negative to talk about. But when we have a rush and two people in the counter, it is very stressful. One co-worker already went to the hospital in an ambulance twice because of the anxiety. In a place where we are left to fend for ouselves on a regular basis, the environment suffers greatly. When that happens so does a bit of our customer service suffer. People start walking away and I del horrible for t getting to them faster. But I'm only human.
Most of our co-workers and customers are wonderful. Friendly and regular, we get to know them and help them in their daily routine. Some of my customers will even wait for me to serve them instead of letting a co-worker serve them. My co-workers and I have good work relationship. Even if we don't get along all time. We are mature enough to not make a scene in front of the customer.
Stress is brought home and has caused my spouse to say I need another job. I've cried because of my job and it's emotionally killing me.
Being the only Safeway on Whidbey Island, our job security is very good. We have the military base in town and it's a retirement community. If anything, our job security has grown. With all the military squadrons coming and going we always meet new people and we have the opportunity to connect.
Besides only having two stalls in the restroom and one being for the handicapped, we try help those who have trouble. A lot of my co-workers will come round the counter to hand something to a customer who is handicapped, than have them get up and reach for something.
Working in a deli, no matter how many safety rules you put in place there's always a small burn here, or a cut there. Having dry skin doesn't help. When washing hands I find a new crack in my skin every other day. We clean the floors the best we can but sometimes I still slip. I catch myself every time but someone should make better slip resistant shoes.
Every day is a new challenge of how on earth are we going to get by this time? We have this many people to do this many tasks while helping this many customers while this piece of equipment isn't working still and now another has broken down. If you like the sound of this, come work for Safeway.
Inclusive / Diverse
Diverse in culture maybe but we could use a few more guys. We need more men that have a good work ethic and sense of humor. Its just less emotionally draining that way.
What I like about the company
The health insurance and $3000 my spouse and kids will get if I pass away accidentally while working.
What I dislike about the company
Almost everything from my department manager to corporate.
