As an employee for 10 months now I can offer an exclusive insight on the daily work environment of SAS Sales
The culture at SAS is very relaxed but with a strong, professional backbone. This allows for employees to feel less stressed and much more comfortable without sacrificing work productivity.
Support from management
Management is very friendly and always willing to help. They make it clear what needs to be done and will always assist you in finishing the job. However, management usually never gets to hear from the average employee and sometimes fail to understand the dynamic of certain store(some stores are much different than others and require different conditions in order to optimize sales).
The manager to part/fulltime employee relationship is very friendly but still professional. Everyone does have their own selling statistics but it is never used to evaluate job successfulness. We do occasionally have competitions between employees to see who can sell the most of a certain item, but this is always in good fun and there are never consequences, only rewards for doing good.
Freedom to work independently
SAS puts a great amount of trust into it's employees, however it is still a retail store and thus the ability to work independently is hindered. This is not a problem, however because the team-oriented environment creates a place where you never have to worry about meeting deadlines or failing to perform in a certain area.
By keeping a close connection with all levels of management. SAS creates an environment where someone would never be afraid of contacting higher levels of management.
Some of SAS's top executives are women(as well as the CEO) and the company makes it very clear that gender has NO role in any company positions. Gender isn't even something that should be a concern at SAS.
Attitude towards older colleagues
SAS has great respect for older workers, and age has never been a concern for hiring someone. On top of this, the company also does not discriminate against younger workers and will always give anyone, regardless of age, an opportunity to work for this great company.
As with all retail, it would take a long time to develop any sort of career at SAS. The company is always happy to consider promotions and further opportunities however.
Overall compensation for your work
As a basic retail employee, the company offers great promotions and bonuses. We get a bonus twice a year during the winter/summer and even special events for birthdays. The only complaint with this is the pay is fairly low for a retail job but the relaxed and friendly environment easily makes up for this.
Office / Work Environment
SAS offers great freedom when it comes to the work environment, allowing the employees to setup the break room however they like while also giving AC controls to the employees of each individual store. This allows for the employees to setup their work environment to be however they please.
SAS recycles all unused bags and boxes. On top of this all SAS bags are made up of recycled paper.
At my particular store, there is almost always too-few employees. We are not severely understaffed, however there are times where it is difficult to get certain days off as a part time employee. Note: This is only at my store and most stores have an acceptable amount of employees.
Being a family-owned business, SAS creates a lot of pride within its workers. Everyday I feel noticed and take a bit of ownership within the company. Sometimes, it can be a little difficult to get your voice heard but they will never ignore what you have to say, even if you're only a part time retail employee.
SAS offers incredible job security and benefits.
SAS has full handicap accessibility within its stores and treats disabled individuals with respect, just as they'd treat anyone else.
Being a shoe store, there isn't much danger to working at SAS. However, where there is danger SAS makes sure to properly train all employees(for example, on how to properly operate a ladder) to make sure that they will never be put in a dangerous situation.
The work at SAS is fairly simple as it is a shoe store, however, there is challenge in actually making a sale sometimes. As we do track certain sales, it can feel really good when completing a challenging sale, and you'll never really have to worry about punishment for not making a sale.
Inclusive / Diverse
SAS creates an environment where anyone can work free of harassment. A great HR team always makes sure that your voice is heard and any/all complaints are not just ignored as they are in some other companies.
Suggestions for improvement
- SAS has an incredible environment, however there is always room for improvement. By offering a more competitive pay, the company would have no problem keeping employees and acquiring new ones.
What I like about the company
I love the overall environment of SAS. The friendly, caring workplace allows for me to never feel like my voice isn't heard, and the bonuses the company offer show that my work is never unaccounted for.
What I dislike about the company
The pay is on the lower end of the "competitive" scale and they never really offer raises.
