Suggestions for improvement

  • 1. tough and uniformly enforced behavior standards throughout the system 2. tough and enforced BAN on all student cell phones during the instructional day 3. an END to rampant social promotions in the elementary grades, which leads to students in high school who read at an AVERAGE of about 4th grade level 4. entry testing to get into HONORS classes at ALL of the high schools, to replace current system that obviously fills those classes to make numbers look good, even though many of the students enrolled in those classes are neither qualified nor in possession of good study skills or even basic discipline or self control

What I like about the company

although teaching in and of itself is challenging, and inner city teaching like in Philly moreso, there are still those moments of satisfaction, when you make a real impact in the lives of your students. Those are what makes the bureaucracy, the total lack of discipline, the low standards, and the heavy pressure to pass students who have done nothing to earn their grades bearable

What I dislike about the company

Upper management mandates programs and basically mandates results. They do NOT seem interested in enforcing any kind of standards on the students however. When suspension numbers were too high, they just mandated no suspensions, instead of truly addressing the actual problems. I am sorry, but I do not view a superintendent who has overseen a roughly 1% increase in standardized test scores as successful. In the business world, that executive would be FIRED.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Get rid of half of the supposed experts, supervisors, and administrators. They are a drain on taxpayers and provide no real benefit to the workplace. In fact, they are an impediment to progress.

What I like about the company

The majority of the students are nice.

What I dislike about the company

The management is horrible. They are incompetent in pretty much everything they do. They just seem to be very out of touch with what is really going on and what needs to be done. They are cowardly in their approach to their employees, and would rather discipline someone than actually have an adult and professional conversation about issues happening in the work place. The physical conditions of the building are horrific--leaking toilets, no soap, filthy hallways, vermin and waste everywhere. It is truly a disgusting place to work.
