What I like

There is an adversarial relationship between the Shelbyville County Board of Education and it's teachers. This relationship also exists within most schools, between administrators and teachers.

What I dislike

Teachers are not compensated very well for the work that is expected or for their leven of responsibility. Salary increases are based on student performance, something that ver which teachers do not have total control. Eech year for the last decade health insurance costs more and more out of pocket. The "stress-to-compensation" ratio is out of balance.

It can be very very challenging to be a teacher in an elementary school.

The community of Shelby county desperately need the school system to work well. My position is important to that.

What I like

While I will never understand why public education is so antiquated, and I become extremely frustrated with those above me, I do not regret one minute of me able to make any kind of impact of the students of this community

What I dislike

Budget decisions are extremely inefficient. Too many "middle management" who have titles but no really power. Their positions are based on an endorsement coded on their education license and not quality of work.

Suggestions for improvement

I would allow teachers absolute freedom to perform their job. Only if the students are not performing would I require them to change.I would look at each student as an individual so they reach graduation on the path that best fits their aptitudes and skil

Company Culture

I am lucky that I have some good co-workers in a difficult place where there is little support

Company Image

Because of the work I do with students

Work-Life Balance

Less time during work hours forces work to home

Career Development

Degree based, not quality of work.

Inclusive / Diverse

Workforce is very diverse

Environmental Friendliness

My school does because a faculty member took control of recycling. District as a whole does not

Workplace Safety

Required trainings every year

Teamwork

More of a "do what we say" without knowing challenges

Attitude towards older colleagues

Retirement in Tennessee education is 30 years and raises end at 18

Support from management

Some parts of district provide support while others do not

Office / Work Environment

Temp controlled from a central location. Building are different

Challenging Work

Public education has so many factors coming at those of us in the buildings. Pressure from students and parents and more from administration at the district and state levels.

Job Security

High evaluation scores and work the continue improving

Internal Communication

Better with negative than the positive.

Gender Equality

Women hold many administrative positions

Freedom to work independently

Almost every part of teaching is now scripted.

What I like

It feels like working with family. There is always someone willing to help. You will always have someone in the building you can rely on and will become close with.

What I dislike

I would change the way some schools communicate with one another. In the presence of a few schools you can feel as an outsider because they're more reserved in offering assistance.

Suggestions for improvement

The company is fine as it is. I cannot think of anything that is big enough to change across the widespread school system.

Company Culture

Everyone is helpful and willing to share knowledge.

Career Development

Their is always room to advance

Inclusive / Diverse

Multicultural learning and activities takes place year round.

Teamwork

Most work is group or team planned. In order for plans to workout successfully coworkers must interact well together.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Most people work for this company well past their retirement years.

Office / Work Environment

Works year round to provide adequate working conditions for all buildings

Internal Communication

Communications is ongoing in the form of an email, call, or text.

What I like

I am able to be very flexible at my job (to accept an assignment or not; a choice to go to any site I chose; to be able to work with all grade levels). I get encouraging feedback on my abilities, work ethics and relationships with the students. I can be as creative as I want to be. I get a chance to learn more each day about the teaching occupation.

What I dislike

There have been times (not often) when I have received negative feedback on how I choose to handle a situation involving a student(s). I felt at that time, that there was no administration to handle the situation properly and no support.

Suggestions for improvement

I feel that there could be changes made as far a pay; benefits for substitute teachers

What I like

Great company I enjoy working for them! It is a good feeling being able to provide for my family.

What I dislike

More events and benefits are beneficial for substitute teachers. Even though we are part time.

Suggestions for improvement

The improvements would lie with the real teachers and how they plan for their students.

Working in this field is challenging but rewarding. It requires you to be self-motivated, but can be a great employer.

What I like

Working with students is rewarding at times, in this job you have the potential for being autonomous in your daily work depending on your direct supervisor. Great schedule with most holidays off, nights and weekends off, as well as several lengthy breaks.

What I dislike

The job is very challenging and you are evaluated based on certain factors beyond your control. There is also most likely 5+ hours of work per week that need to be done outside of work hours.

Suggestions for improvement

There is little the employer can do to improve the hardest parts of this job. The state mandates are rigorous and make work-life balance challenging at times.

What I like

I really enjoy working with the people at my job. That is my favorite part of the job.

What I dislike

I don't like the overwhelming amount of bureaucracy and lack of freedom to work with the students in a way that benefits everyone.

Suggestions for improvement

I would improve the policies and the funds to fix and improve building conditions and maintenance. That is very lacking.
