Support from management
Management is so far out of touch with reality. Employee morality across-the-board is at an all-time Low
Management dumps their work on employees and takes the credit of the employees and rate them unfairly because they can't complete all the work.
Typically the last to know about anything that is directly related to you or that can have an impact on your work flow.
Attitude towards older colleagues
People are not hired based off their knowledge, yet hired based off who they know. Working hard does not pay off.
98% of the jobs at the zoo are dead end jobs.
Overall compensation for your work
They will tell you that you work above the crumbs they pay you, but refuse to give you better pay for the amount of work you do.
Office / Work Environment
It's a zoo so you really can't expect too much in safety. No clear directions in the event of a real emergency.
For the most part if you need off, they really can't tell you no, but it's known to happen multiple times I've been working at the zoo.
The work is challenging which in the beginning you might love, but once you start asking logical question as to why a process is the way it is and why you can't make it better, you'll have an entirely different meaning of the word challenging.
Suggestions for improvement
- Get rid of complacent management staff.
What I like about the company
The ability to see so many cool animals and meet the keepers that do all of the hard work.
What I dislike about the company
Unfair treatment of employees and disadvantages / unfair practices that are a common at the Smithsonian.
