The only reason I give this 2 stars is because you have a generous amount of other employees in the same sucky boat of hating the firm as much as you do and venting to each other, which actually build friendships and end up being the only positive thing here.
Support from management
Most of The “supervisors” haven’t even been fully licensed attorneys for over 2-3 years. It’s the blind leading the blind. Either way, there is no support, no teaching...just passive aggressive emails and awkward monthly case meetings that have no real productivity.
None at all. They have supervisors but they don’t help, they scold you instead and throw you under the bus. Even most of the paralegals aren’t much help to lawyers because they were hired for the low, with no prior legal experience whatsoever and are thrown into chaos with bare minimum training. I think the only teamwork I saw while I was an employee was when my attorney was getting creamed by a judge for a case that was not even ours and they got sanctioned for it. The “generous” head partner said the firm would eat up the sanctions cost if they could not argue out of it. Others had mentioned that this has happened at least about 10 times already with sanctions.
Freedom to work independently
Some people have a very small room shared with like 2 others. Some have cubicles in the basement and attorneys have small offices. You can try to work independently but the offices are just so small and get so hot and uncomfortable, it’s impossible to actually make use of all your time in a cramped space, while getting bombarded by emails.
The head partner is a con. He smiles in everyone’s face, promises them the world with more training and better pay and less workload or less crap cases etc; but only to have all those concerns you bring up to him, go from one ear right out the other. Because of this, the firm’s internal communication amongst legal assistants to paralegals, constantly being assigned to new lawyers, the horrendous calendar system, and discovery status conferences are a joke because no one has a clue as to what is going on.
Men and women seem to be equal, but there is most definitely some sexual harassment incidents behind the scenes that the head partner was made aware of but nothing was done. Many staff members are aware.
Attitude towards older colleagues
If this is what I would have to look up to as a “role model” or wanting to be like this firms “Trial Attorneys”....you’re better off watching Trial TV. You learn more in jury duty watching other professionals.
People with no experience at all will walk out learning something. If you’re an attorney or already know a lot, there is nothing you can sharpen or learn from here. Don’t waste your time!
Overall compensation for your work
Low pay. Extremely excessive workload. You get jipped 30 mins from the 1 hour lunch break they initially told you.
Office / Work Environment
Excessively hot in every floor except the bottom . There is only 1 kitchen for 60+ people and maybe 3 bathrooms max.
Most staff is genuinely friendly, including associate attorneys are generally very laid back. The exceptions are for the passive-aggressive Supervisors, the smile in your face/weirdo head partner and his “right hand” paralegal, who has been with him for decades and is nothing but manipulative and full of power-trip, which the partner continues to turn a blind eye to.
Decent work-life balance if you don’t stress over the workload and just come in and leave when you’re supposed to. If you stay and try to play catch up or try to be an over achiever, you’ll be consumed and they’ll scam you on overtime anyway.
Everyone in Orange County knows who this firm is and it’s not in a good way. The judges dislike the terrible cases this firm tries to argue. Plus, it doesn’t help that the genious head partner mandated a thing called SOBO SATURDAYS where no lawyers are allowed to go to court or do anything out of the office, so essentially all the judges dislike this firm that much more because the partner has told all judges that the firm won’t appear for any of them on fridays....Way to put a target on your back!
If you have no greater aspiration for yourself , then you can probably stay here and twiddle your thumbs all day and they would never fire you because they are ALWAYS losing people. People always quit 1 year later now that they have some experience, just to search for other legal work and land a better law firm, so they are ALWAYS hiring people and I have never seen anyone get fired...not even the laziest staff member.
Good luck getting to any floor except the main floor. There are 0 elevators in a pre-war house that resembles a maze, which has about 4-5 floors total.
Cars are constantly banging into each other because there is not enough parking space and people squeeze the cars in as much as you can. Cars even park behind others and block other people in with no way to get out, that need to leave ASAP in case their child or family has an emergency. I once asked why there were no elevators with all those flights of stairs and I was told that the head partner would then be mandated by law to install Water sprinklers throughout the building and because he didn’t want to pay the cost, the firm can no longer expand upward, but can only expand side to side, which just takes away more parking space for employees.
The only challenging thing I found is trying to figure out how most cases accident and injury even happened....as most of the time there is no evidence of impact, or liability or damage, no pictures of scene, clean records, no injury and the head partner still tells the staff to file suit on these cases. Apparently “Puffery” goes a long way at this firm...
Inclusive / Diverse
The office has many employees from different races, backgrounds, LGBT, young and old.
Suggestions for improvement
- Burn the place down to the ground and start over with really well trained and hardworking employees, better office technology and actually changing things instead of having a useless “open door policy” to hear the concerns of your employees, but nothing ever gets fixed. Choosing better cases would alleviate a lot of work load and dropping all cases where clients are no where to be found between 6-12 months.
What I like about the company
Not 1 thing.
What I dislike about the company
Beside everything stated above, I believe the company uses false/fake people or users to write “GREAT” reviews online for them, like on the firm’s Google Reviews.
