Suggestions for improvement
- I would allow for more collaborative decisions-- made by those on the front lines, or at least considering their feedback. At the same time, reducing the amount of power upper administration has over everything collectively. I would also incorporate benefits like reduced meal plans at the cafeterias, free gym memberships at the recreation center, the ability to work remotely, and allowing pets at least a few days a week. Morale is especially low at this time, and rather than find easy ways to bring it up (by doing little things), management just seems to drive it further and further down.
What I like about the company
The other employees in my office are great to work with, and generally support one another as coworkers and as friends. We have the ability to flex our office hours to work around other scheduling conflicts in our personal lives, which helps achieve a nice work/life balance. Our benefits are decent, and the pay isn't terrible for a government job.
What I dislike about the company
Management make really poor decisions, especially in times of a state budget crisis. They spend in areas they shouldn't (on unnecessary things), while cutting jobs and benefits to the employees. The organization as a whole is very top-heavy, and they like to micromanage and provide input in areas they know nothing about. As long as people play the right political games, they can advance as far as they want; if you don't buy into that, you may as well start looking for a new job, because you'll be gone as soon as they can get rid of you.
