Suggestions for improvement

  • Pay the bedside nursing staff more and not increase the upper management pay. Have upper management see all that the bedside nursing staff has to deal with personally. Compensation for having higher education degrees. Separate the patient satisfaction scores for things that are not in nursing staff control such as food quality.

What I like about the company

I have worked at Spectrum Health for over 17 years. I have been a medical office secretary, a nursing assistant, and a bedside nurse. There are numerous opportunities to move within the organization. My unit has great teamwork and makes me want to come to work. We have fun in a very stressful critical care setting. There is a collaborative team approach to patient care that is very rewarding.

What I dislike about the company

The upper management doesn’t seem to understand the bedside nursing concerns. They are trying to improve communication with more frequent surveys of staff. The pay for critical care nurses is not enough. Higher education degrees are not compensated for.

Company Culture

It is changing from caring about the clients being the #1 priority to filling beds and making money being more important than quality of care

Support from management

Senior leadership makes all decisions and starts working on most plans in a vacuum with little communication or attempts to get buy in from those doing the work

Teamwork

In spite of weaker leadership, mid-level management usually pulls together to make positive things happen

Internal Communication

Communication from senior leadership and management to staff is poor and often so delayed that the information was already passed along in some version through the grapevine

Career Development

This is one area where they are attempting to do some good things, but have yet to implement any meaningful development strategies (though they have plans)

Overall compensation for your work

Industry standard salaries for management and above; good wages for clinical staff and nurses, below average for the industry for recovery specialists, direct care staff, etc...

Office / Work Environment

The corporate office is switching from a culture of teamwork and coordination to finger pointing and covering one's own butt

Suggestions for improvement

  • It would be nice to have parking that is closer for some of our employees that have to walk several blocks. This has been a problem since our city is expanding and building in our area.

What I like about the company

I started with my company just 3 1/2 years ago and my wages have already almost doubled. I have been afforded many opportunities to learn and grow in different areas of health care. I have worked in the biometric screening clinics, for employee health services, I worked as an executive assistant in continuing care, I also worked as a transplant financial coordinator in the blood and marrow transplant program. From there, I was transferred to work as a physician recruitment coordinator specifically assisting with on boarding of our new APPs. I now work in a dual role; serving as administrative assistant to the director of neural clinical and orthopedic out reach program services, as well as lead administrative assistant overseeing the conference rooms for the entire medical group administrative offices. The spectrum health medical group is part of the larger spectrum health organization which provides services with hospitals, continuing care, medical group facilities, emergent care, as well as Priority Health insurance services. We currently have over 27,000 employees and are growing rapidly. The plan and vision for Spectrum Health is to be known as “the medical mile”, and the number one medical health system in the United States by 2020, surpassing the Mayo Clinic. I am proud to be a part of this team as it is expanding and growing. Especially in regards to the Nuro clinical in orthopedics out reach program that I am a part of. Our Neurosciences department has recently expanded our stroke services team and are continuing with a plan to develop a more in-depth services and studies in the area of dementia. The orthopedic out reach program has been successful in setting up athletic trainers in our area schools and businesses to help promote healthier lifestyles and aid in therapy for individuals who are currently suffering from disabilities that hinder their daily activities at work or school. I am proud to be a part of spectrum health services In m

What I dislike about the company

I feel that I am compensated fairly. However, it is my understanding that there are some female physicians who may not be receiving equal pay to their male counterparts.
