Expectations of applicants

The Coding Interview

46685cb14695ad0fcd46.jpg

The goal of a coding or a technical interview is to spend a little more time trying to solve problems that are difficult to do over the phone. These interviews are typically done in person or through Skype. Whenever possible, we prefer a face to face interview. This also enable us to determine if there is a good social and cultural fit with our team.

The Phone Interview

685979fa1db9fa379ffa.jpg

If you’ve been busy solving big problems at your current job, you may not have had a chance to think about how to prepare for a phone interview. Rather than go in cold, take a few moments to make sure that you are well prepped. Getting through this is the first step to being invited to an onsite interview.

Advice to applicants

Establishing Initial Contact

Once you’ve applied to an opening, you will be contacted by someone on our recruiting team. They will be your guide and friend throughout the interview and on boarding process. Ask them anything and they will give you an honest answer — hiring a cultural misfit is a lose-lose situation for everyone and we want to avoid it as much as you do.

The Interview Process

Our interview process starts with a phone interview. This call will be conversational and relaxed.  Expect it to last about an hour, unless you need more time to ask questions. Software Engineer
Office Assistant/Brand Ambassador
Cloud Sysops Engineer

Crystal Noschese, Staff Accountant

What attracted you to this company?

The company's mission and work environment.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I come into the office, grab a cup of coffee and some water, sit (or stand) at my desk and check emails and get after the tasks I have to get done that day.

What do you like best about your job?

The people I work with and the job environment. It makes all the difference.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

The biggest challenge I face in my role is the new skills I have to constantly learn. My position consists of a lot of areas that I don't have a strong background in, however I have taken this opportunity to continue learning and growing from my supervisor in order to develop myself profesionally and be an asset to the company.

Describe how your team works together.

We are able to bounce ideas off one another and count on each other to get the work done. It is also nice to have a team you get along with so we can talk about life things to decompress as well. My team definitely keeps me afloat with our busy schedule of meetings and deadlines.

What makes the company a good fit for you?

The ability to expand my knowledge and work on things outside of my day to day job.

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

Don't be afraid to be yourself and present who you are and your accomplishments. The only person in the interview to discuss your qualifications to the hiring manager is yourself and your resume. Be sure to have a smile on.

Daniel Pickert, Junior Software Engineer

What attracted you to this company?

I was immediately attracted to SpinSys because of the unique office space with a nap room and game room, flexible work hours, and the ability to work remotely. Throughout the interview process, I also became excited about the people and the culture.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I come in to the office, grab a cup of coffee or tea, then sit down and get to work.

What do you like best about your job?

I enjoy walking into a calm, spacious environment that I previously hadn't experienced in office settings before. Everyone is very welcoming and I like having a mentor, Chris, that I can go to for any questions or advice.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

The biggest challenges I face in my role are keeping up with the more experienced developers around me. I'm relatively new to the field and there's so much to learn that it can be overwhelming when concepts don't click right away. So, I try to find a good middle ground between asking questions and developing an understanding on my own.

Describe how your team works together.

Because many team members are located in different parts of the country, we communicate mainly through Slack and sometimes by phone. I'd say a good description of the team here would be friendly and efficient.

What makes the company a good fit for you?

The office environment facilitates learning in a big way. Whether it's the people I can go to for help, or the different sections I can go to focus -- I feel like I have the resources here to become a great software engineer.

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

Be yourself and ask questions about what you can start learning that will help the team so you can contribute on day 1.

Terry Kemp, Software Engineer

What attracted you to this company?

The culture and team atmosphere.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

My day starts about 830am with a piping hot cup of coffee and signing into our systems, checking emails, and slack messages. Followed by our 930 scrum to go over our progress from yesterday and our task for the day. Refilling on coffee after our scrum, I dive into the project for about 2-3hours and take about an hour break and go work out and clear my head, then have lunch. After lunch it is back to work for a couple more hours. About 430-5 I sign out and go about the rest of my day.

What do you like best about your job?

The people.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

I believe my biggest challenge is also the biggest positive about my role. Being remote is a challenge at times, due to the fact that if I have a question, I can't walk over to someone and ask them. Instead, I have to make sure they are available and able to talk and then call them and hopefully ask my question in the correct way.  Although being remote is my biggest challenge, it is also a major positive about my role. It has afforded my family and I to work from anywhere as well as travel while I work.

Describe how your team works together.

My team has experts in every field we are working in. Some are better on the back-end and some are better on the front-end. Nobody is afraid to ask a question and help out if you are stuck on a problem.

What makes the company a good fit for you?

The ability to learn and grow as a junior developer and ask questions.

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

Be yourself and be positive. This is a great place to work and has an amazing culture. Spinsys thinks about you as the employee. Leadership knows your name and are available to talk anytime you need them.

Jordan Nolte, Office Assistant/Brand Ambassador

What attracted you to this company?

When I first spoke with the recruiter over the phone, I knew this company was the right fit for me. Between the people, the endless snacks in the kitchen, and the atmosphere, I knew I would love it here.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I usually start my day by stocking the kitchen and organizing the meeting rooms. Once the office is ready for the day, I check my messages and start my list of things to do.

What do you like best about your job?

I love the people and the atmosphere. The culture of the office is different than any other place that I have worked.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

n/a

Describe how your team works together.

Here at SpinSys, we all listen to each other's opinions, have positive attitudes, and are always willing to help others with difficult tasks.

What makes the company a good fit for you?

I enjoy the structure of the office, but I also like that everyday is different for me. One day I might be tidying things up in the office, while another day I might be helping with marketing tasks.

Do you have any tips for the interview process?

I would recommend being yourself and be prepared. Also, don't be afraid to talk about your accomplishments and what you truly enjoy in the workplace.

Personality is everything, Spin Systems looks for members that work well together and drive to learn.
