Company culture

The culture is that of everyone wondering when they will be laid off. Constantly worrying about their jobs.

Support from Management

Upper management couldn't care less about employees, partners, and customers. Their actions improve stock pricing in the short term only.

Teamwork

Team members are global and stretched to thin.there is no time for process improvement or collaboration.

Communication

Upper management tends to stretch the truth or simply not tell you when they are planning a major change. They speak about open communication, but do not practice it.

Gender Equality

Lack is advancement is the theme if you're female.add to that, low wages compared to male counterparts.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Older people are let go and not advanced.

Career Development

There is no career development. No personal goals, no advice for your career path.

Overall Compensation for your work

Benefits are good.

Work-Life Balance

60-70 hours a week for months on end worth no solution in sight.

Company Image

There image now I'd overpriced, so-so product, with no support.

Job security

There is no job security at symantec. It doesn't matter how good your reviews are, you could be out the door tomorrow.

Handicap Accessibility

Excellent in this area.

Workplace Safety

Good in this area as well.

Challenging Work

Difficult due to antiquated technical and lack of competent trackback support

Suggestions for improvement

  • Pay attention to employees, customers, and partners. They are what keep you in business. Not everything can be outsourced or off shored. Sometimes, you get exactly what you paid for.

What I like about the company

Co workers are intelligent, hard working people who do their best everyday in spite of poor management decisions.

What I dislike about the company

Upper mismanaged doesn't seem to have any idea what they are doing, proven by multiple changes, in opposite directions, never allowing any plan to complete.

Company culture

no trust from company... seems like Symantec is downsizing in USA and finding cheapest agents to support products... no employee retention nor attempts to keep well trained employees

Support from Management

seems like supervisors/managers are not getting support and it shows with employees

Teamwork

most employees work well together... perhaps the most satisfying part of the Symantec experience

Level of Autonomy

too rigid on cases/calls coming in... not flexible on what agent is strong at... if only was to allow agents to take what strong at or trade cases in an adult like manner

Communication

too much hidden from top part of company on company planning... seems to be an atmosphere of shareholder governed discisions

Gender Equality

I saw no difference between a man or woman doing a support or management position

Attitude towards older colleagues

Symantec seemed like they ignored the fact that some agents were seasoned/senior... however, it seems like certain times the seasoned/senior salaries were in way of cost cutting times

Career Development

there seems to be no room for growth in salary nor career in the plans of Symantec and its agents... shares and cost cutting seem to be in front

Overall Compensation for your work

salary is low due to Symantec choosing an area to have low salaries... now certain regions (India) are being considered instead due to even lower salary potential... Salary is paid on time... benefits seem ok compared to market... (in past benefits were superior)
Wage increases are extremely low or rarer in recent times...

Office/Work Environment

another rare piece of Symantec that is very good... building in Springfield, OR is newer and well maintained

Eco-consciousness

Symantec seems to be "green" and environmental aware

Work-Life Balance

a lot of peer pressure or 'clicks'/social classes... seems like everybody is looking out for own self and making it hard environment to work in

Company Image

Employees tend to be quiet talking about Symantec in fear of being a bad mark made on them (silently placed and not shared)

Job security

Since June of 2015, Symantec has made over 3 major layoffs in Springfield, OR... as of late, no back-fills nor new hires being made

Handicap Accessibility

The site has good amount of accessibility for disabled employees

Workplace Safety

Symantec is mostly a cubicle support organization in Springfield, OR and has very good safety

Challenging Work

the cases (when allowed to work it to completion) are fun to solve...

Inclusive/Diverse

Symantec attempts to show a diverse opinion... I still feel that 'clicks'/social classes quench an opinion that is different to end goal

Suggestions for improvement

  • where making money is great, don't just cut costs on or with the employees... be aware that shareholders are not the end all for a successful company
  • be aware that laying 100s of agents off can really affect an area... I have been trying to get a job in my market for over 10 months due to a flooded market of 'talent'

What I like about the company

there are many people still within Symantec that are fun to be with and solve complex issues... that culture makes the job fun...

What I dislike about the company

the company started out with an employee centered culture... 10-15 years later, it is now shareholder centered and seems like decisions are made to please them

Company culture

An culture of 'you do not matter and can be laid off at any moment'

Support from Management

Upper management does not seem to understand the negative effects of the actions they have taken.

Teamwork

Teams try very hard to come together in spite of the obstacles.

Communication

We are continuously misled.

Career Development

You can work yourself to death and be let go tomorrow in favor of offshore personnel.

Overall Compensation for your work

Pay and benefits are good

Office/Work Environment

Other than the stress, we have very nice accommodations.

Eco-consciousness

Overall, the company tries to be very visible.

Work-Life Balance

Long, long hours with no relief in sight.

Job security

There is no security. You are only a line on a chart and they will let you go at any moment no matter how needed your knowledge actually is.

Challenging Work

Over challenging as there is no resolution to the broken tools. Constantly feel as though you are battling to do your job.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Stop to think before you act. Involve knowledgeable people before you decide to 'improve' something. Once a plan is in place, stick with it long enough to see if it works. We change so often, no plan, even if good, has a chance to be successful. Stop looking at short term returns and start thinking long term. This is far more successful and sustainable. Above all, cheaper does not mean better or even as good as. You get what you pay for. The stream of offshoring positions is killing us by losing all retained knowledge.

What I like about the company

Immediate managers are very supportive.

What I dislike about the company

Upper managers seem to be completely removed and do not understand that they have gutted our ability to please our customers and partners. They only seem to be interested in share holder returns, no matter the long term cost. Constant CEO and re-orgs only prove that they have no idea what they are doing and how what they have done is negatively effecting our sales and customer satisfaction.

Support from Management

Very poor management support. Only seem to interested in their share price and not about long term growth or customer satisfaction

Teamwork

Teams do their best in spite of the obstacles

Communication

Given misinformation constantly by upper management

Attitude towards older colleagues

Seems they are let go often

Work-Life Balance

Long long hours and still under water. Not enough staff where needed

Job security

There is no security. You can be laid off any moment.

Suggestions for improvement

  • This company desperately needs upper management that is more concerned with customers and partner satisfaction than I their own bonuses.

What I like about the company

Immediate managers are excellent.

What I dislike about the company

Upper management doesn't seem to understand the realities of the decisions they have made and the negative impact on employees, customers, and partners.

Company culture

When I was there there was no single culture-- just a conglomeration of all the acquired cultures from the companies that were bought out by Symantec.

Support from Management

In previous jobs I was involved in many confidential changes. At Symantec, only the 'in-crowd' was consulted or even considered when making far-reaching decisions.

Teamwork

Many individuals gave their all to make Symantec successful. Management neither appreciated nor recognized the efforts to make Symantec work.

Level of Autonomy

Individual effort was rarely recognized and often treated as being insubordinate.

Communication

Communications (one way-down) were mostly effective.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Move them out for the next, cheaper workforce.

Career Development

I worked there for almost 10 years and was never offered a promotion nor guidance to what I could to earn one.

Overall Compensation for your work

Fair and equitable.

Office/Work Environment

Some of the best office space in Silicon valley!

Eco-consciousness

Attempts were tried but mostly put on the individual employees.

Work-Life Balance

What life?

Company Image

Be afraid, be very afraid is not far from the entire marketing scheme...

Job security

I never felt secure in my job for nearly 10 years-- and then I was laid off!

Challenging Work

Only due to the lack of executive support.

Inclusive/Diverse

Always a concern, but never effectively realized.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I believe the divestment of VERITAS will benefit both organizations greatly!

What I like about the company

I really liked joining VERITAS.

What I dislike about the company

When Symantec acquired VERITAS, it was a constant battle to keep things moving. Everyone had a reason to stop you from being successful.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I really don't know - I'm not aware of the direction Symantec has gone in the last year.

What I like about the company

The overall corporate environment is very forward-looking. In recent years they've gone through a process to remove barriers to inter-department "siloing" and getting everyone on the same team and page.

What I dislike about the company

The laid me and my entire department off when the Symantec/ Veritas split occurred. On the plus side, they did so in the least-bad way I could think of. I.E., we had several months of notice to look for new jobs, career placement, severance package, etc...

Company culture

Limited checks/balances regarding opportunity creation, leading to rewarding inflated results and not recognizing hard, honest efforts. It is the easy way out for managers, and helps managers remain lazy and removed from day to day activities/struggles of reps.

Support from Management

Some Managers are inexperienced and think too highly of themselves. These managers often feel entitled, given their titles, and have trouble checking ego. I made no secret of my disdain for some of the management at symatec.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Embrace employees, properly vet manager candidates, be clear in communicating especially during times of uncertainty. Set the right expectations.

What I like about the company

For self starters it's a great opportunity to learn independence and learn on your own. When I was there I had to rely on myself to find information because many supervisors did not have the desire and/or knowledge to assist. Not in every situation, but more so than not. Gross mismanagement of expectations, specifically around compensation and future plans.

What I dislike about the company

Employees are treated as expendable and upper management is far more interested in appeasing shareholders. It's not balanced. Mid level managers try desperately to appease upper level managers and as such, when issues arise, mid level managers don't want to ruffle any feathers.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Shuttle options from San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Oakland would really be useful. Not everyone wants to live in Mountain View.

What I like about the company

Very balanced company. Focused on employee development and growth.

What I dislike about the company

It's far from SF (where I live) and there's no employee shuttle options at all.
