Annual goals not realistic for employees - therefore annual employee performance suffers - allows them to keep annual increases very small.
Level of Autonomy
Management looks over your shoulder, you are not fully trusted to be a professional and do your job.
You will go nowhere if you don't fit the preferred image and schooling. With that said, they really want middle management so that is path of least resistance. They have a company wide training program called The Edge so you can get there. That is the employee graveyard, very hard to rise above and only small pay increase over people you are responsible for.
