Suggestions for improvement

  • Individual roles need to be outlined more specifically and training for specific roles carried out. I received only one (extremely informal) performance review in five years of working as a Human Services Specialist! The structure of the company is ambiguous; job titles/duties bleed into one another. Structure, organization, clear goals for clients... these are all severely lacking. There are extremely limited opportunities for growth within the company, as it appears to serve the budget to keep employees in entry level positions/pay grades.

What I like about the company

My positive experiences with the company came from witnessing growth and transformation in the clients I served through my daily interactions with them. I'd like to say, and I hope it is the case, that I helped to encourage, inform and model behavior and life skills that truly caused a change in individuals' lives. Sometimes it isn't so straightforward or clear, but there are always those moments where you really know you've connected and hit the mark with another person, and it is exceptionally gratifying to feel that you've made a difference in some way.

What I dislike about the company

The company was very disorganized and management/supervisory roles were disconnected from the rest of the team or dysfunctional. Advancement opportunities were based on seniority alone, regardless of performance, knowledge/background or professionalism. Being a non-profit meant that managerial/supervisory roles were only concerned with the budget and no emphasis was placed on the actual best interest of clients.

Support from management

Program Supervisor burnt out and does not approach clients from a strength based perspective, not supportive to staff in any way. Poor communication.

Freedom to work independently

Only because program supervisor doesn't want to be bothered but then will come down on you when he did not communicate his vision effectively.

Work-Life Balance

Worked over 60 hours/week on a regular basis. On call 24/7 with employees who called out due to being burnt out.

Company Image

Constantly posting positions, high turn over.

Job Security

Program Supervisor liked to hold the fact that he could "purge" every few months if he felt like it over employees' heads.

Handicapped Accessibility

I advised the program supervisor the units/offices were not ADA compliant and this was brushed off in spite of the fact that we had a staff person who used a wheelchair.

Workplace Safety

Employees do not understand this and cut corners.

Challenging Work

Challenging in the fact that staff receive no support and are overworked and burnt out.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Hire a better Program Supervisor for the Adult Residential Program who approaches the work from a strength based perspective, communicates well, supports his staff, does not speak of the clients as "children" and abides by HIPAA guidelines.

What I dislike about the company

It's a dumpster fire.

Support from management

Support was goodin short time I was there. Wasn't willing to work with me for schedule adjustment due to disability.

Internal Communication

The training process for medication administration was not very complete. Nor were other training aspects.

Attitude towards older colleagues

I felt unappreciated by coworkers who were much younger.

Work-Life Balance

When I started I was scheduled to work seven days in a row. Towards the end one of those shifts was an overnight and coming back in less than eight hours larer.

Challenging Work

The work was boring with a lot of down time.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I suggest that management see people as people and not problems. If someone has a disability be willing to work with them..instead of making them jump through a bunch of hoops.

What I like about the company

I liked the fact that I had the opportunity to work somewhere I'd wanted to for years.

What I dislike about the company

The inflexibility when I asked to be taken off overnight shifts due to a disability.
