Suggestions for improvement
- There is no collaborating between the separate labs in the department. Although they claim there is, this was not the case. Most of the time, if you show that you are a competent worker, you will be working longer hours that what you get paid. Lots of time the PIs do not offer overtime. It isn't as if you are going to throw away months of work for a project and not finish the study/experiment when not being paid for overtime. Implementing overtime would be nice. The kronos system is terrible (over hours no overtime, less hours = docked pay). Bi-weekly pay, work 50 hours 1 wk and 38 hours next week = 2 hours docked pay. So 8 hours extra in the 2 week period is just not right. Sure your boss may say if you work extra 1 wk. due to an experiment, take a day off the next week. However they fail to see that if you take a day off that next week, you will need to account for that time in you timesheet otherwise you get docked pay. Most of the time it costs you a vacation day. Just not right, so 80hrs over the 2 wks is better than 40hrs each week. 40hrs works for most positions, however in research not always the case.
What I like about the company
As starting in a career in science, this company (at least in my department- Center for Substance Abuse Research) offers a good starting point to spring board a career.
