Career Development

Depends on how much lip balm you need. Chapped lips, ability to nod and keep your mouth shut equals fast lane to success!

Overall compensation for your work

Similar to hazard pay, TVA pays well, but how much is your mental & physical health worth?

Office / Work Environment

Most unsafe place I have ever worked. Constantly worried about who says what, who is listening and what punitive action is coming next. Management, regardless of what they say, does NOT want to hear what you have to say and you will be dealt with accordingly if you raise issues.

Job Security

Russian Roulette

Challenging Work

Could be...never seemed to get around to actually doing the work that I spent 40+ hours a week documenting and planning what I was going to do.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Relieve upper management and bring in successful executives from outside private industry that is interested in actually improving the culture vs. prepping it for profit and private sale!

What I like about the company

The employees there actually care about the company, each other and the jobs they do. They want to perform the highest standards and make a difference, the management prevents this atmosphere from spreading.

What I dislike about the company

No moral, lack of safe environment. Its more about documentation and making sure no one can 'blame' you or your management. Internal conflict and finger pointing between internal IT orgs is worse than a sibling rivalry. Criticized for helping co-workers, but overwhelming amount of 'its not my job' and let them sink or swim. Daily feeling of Russian Roulette every day when you walk in the door, worrying if today is the day you badge stops working. Years of dedication and commitment are disregarded in lieu of political agendas! TVA is NOT what it used to be.

Company Culture

change

Support from management

Frequent performance reviews with manager, very willing to assist in developing employee.

Teamwork

the last two organizations I was with would step out of their comfort zone and willingly help out others.

Freedom to work independently

Had the opportunity to work from home and had an office at a remote site.

Internal Communication

every company I have worked for has room for improvement in this area.

Office / Work Environment

excellent facilities

Environmental Friendliness

always looking for ways to save energy.

Job Security

a lot of changes makes for an uneasy feeling of security

Suggestions for improvement

  • Evaluate the orgainzations to determine if the right people are in the right positions.

What I like about the company

They provide a good income, benefits and will develop their employees.

What I dislike about the company

Appears that some of the change is just for the sake of change. Hard to see the big picture with all the confusion.

Company Culture

the culture of serving the Tennessee Valley is still supported by the workers, but does not seem to translate to management.

Support from management

Leadership has changed and does not seem concerned with the individual contributor. From the CEO the head of information security, leadership seems to be focused on their own success not on the company or the individual.

Teamwork

good among teams, not so from management, empire building and preservation of executive bonuses seems to matter here.

Freedom to work independently

TVA has moved to not listening to workers in the last 2 to 3 years.

Internal Communication

communications is okay,

Gender Equality

A lot of good old boy mentality.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Older contributors are forced out. our area's mean age dropped by 20 years in 2016

Career Development

advancement is through moving positions instead of promotion.

Overall compensation for your work

TVA has paid well but incentive bonuses have been cut for individual contributors in 2016

Office / Work Environment

remote work is highly discouraged.

Work-Life Balance

High resistance to work from home.

Company Image

varies depending on the audience. TVA has done a lot for the Tennessee Valley but right of way cutting and some of the lake management is controversial

Job Security

TVA is cutting jobs

Handicapped Accessibility

TVA is under regulatory pressure to meet the disabilities act

Workplace Safety

Safety is highly supported.

Challenging Work

doing much more with less is the theme.

Inclusive / Diverse

Our group in information security has all people of color eliminated as well as older experienced individuals.
