This is a culture of divisiveness. The tactic of scapegoating is a favorite. If you work here, you will, at some point, become the problem. The ENTIRE problem. You will be labeled as the person to point to to pin all of the firm's problems on. And I say this as someone who just narrowly missed becoming the next scapegoat at the time.
Support from management
You have support so long as you blindly follow orders and allow yourself to be blamed when one of the attorneys makes a mistake despite your attempts.
Often members of the staff manage to create some semblance of a teamwork frame, but this eventually gets labeled as "ganging up" and is quickly attacked.
Freedom to work independently
You are expected to do the majority of your work independently, but if you spend too much time on your own, rather than in an attorney's office listening to their complaints, you will become a target.
Communication is CONSTANT but completely hectic and unclear.
People are moved around (in terms of what their actual job title is) so often that it became cause for hesitation to order business cards.
Overall compensation for your work
This is a tough question. Raises are in no way based on merit. They are based on loyalty.
Office / Work Environment
The most negative and divisive work environment I have ever encountered.
You've never seen paper wasted quite like this. They print emails. Twice. Because they often lose copies of just about everything, so it all has to be printed multiple times. Recycling is optional.
Making room for your personal life is used as a tool within the organization to demand loyalty.
I have never actually seen or heard of anyone being fired.
This office is fairly accessible.
This is the hardest you will ever work, because the office is constantly short-staffed and expectations never lower despite the ten random things you were just asked to do, along with your usual work. I am not the kind of person that would ever say, "That's not my job." but if I had to spend an unexpected hour babysitting and another 20 minutes trying to corral one of your pets, no - I may not have had time to complete all of my usual tasks today.
Suggestions for improvement
- Honestly, many people have tried over time, but at this point I am not sure what can be done.
What I like about the company
It was an informative stepping stone on the way to somewhere else.
What I dislike about the company
The divisiveness, the scapegoating, the time you are expected to waste.
