Suggestions for improvement
- Kids need to be priority and the management needs to stop patting themselves on the back for making a good show for the community. This isn't Oliver Twist, these are seriously disturbed kids and the focus needs to be on their goals, treatment, and safety.
What I like about the company
It was great to be able to connect and assist with the population this home served-teenage boys in the custody of DSS. It was very connected to the community so there were perks such as tickets to go places such as sporting events and camping trips with the kids.
What I dislike about the company
It was obvious to me during my time working there that image in the community was much more important than actually making a difference in the lives of the young residents. There were a lot of townies from nearby affluent communities such as Marblehead who were on the board of directors and whenever they were around or involved, it was implied that things should go smoothly and the management should appear flawless, when behind the scenes certain kids were favored over others and treated differently. Also, some residents became angry with the apparent injustices on top of their own individual struggles and as a result there was a lot of acting out. In some instances, there were assaults on staff and damage to staff's property which was kept on the down low as much as possible. Also, they did not abide by the swimming guidelines at the time of my employment. This home was located on the water in Salem and during my work hours I would find kids swimming with no life guard on duty and the upper management just allowed it to happen. Basically, it was an all for show kind of place and the kid's health, well-being were secondary, I'm sad to say. In addition, whenever I advocated for change and safety, i was labeled a troublemaker and in one instance, called a B---h by a prominent person at the time in this establishment.
