There's a lot of stress right now in our denomination.

No. We are pitted against each other.

The process for job promotion has been turned upside down with no communication from the higher ups.

We say how important this is, but don't pay people enough to achieve it without a working spouse.

What I like about the company

The current local church I serve provides a very positive experience. I uave colleagues I greatly appreciate.

What I dislike about the company

The dramatic change in criteria for what is considered a valuable employee. The low pay. Lack of concern for morale.

Again, depends on the Senior Pastor. One I worked for wanted to micromanage everything.

Depending on the Senior Pastor, communication can be mostly positive or mostly negative.

Promotes the fact that all are God's children and all are capable.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Tends to ask elders to "slow down" and retirement is MANDATORY at age 75, even though many pastors over the age of 75 are still sharp and viable.

Career Development

Definitely a dead-end job unless you're clergy, in which case you can "climb the ladder" to more lofty positions.

Overall compensation for your work

Churches don't pay much. PERIOD.

The denomination states that we are all stewards of God's world.

Extremely encouraging, except for LGBTQ. The denomination is struggling with this issue.

Suggestions for improvement

  • How do you improve the business of "God?" I'm not sure how to answer this one.

What I like about the company

For the most part people are caring and understanding and compassion is a definite intangible perk! Others are willing to help and support co-workers and the congregation always provides volunteers who can help with the day-to-day functions of a large church.

What I dislike about the company

I disapprove of the mandatory retirement of pastors when they reach the age of 75. Many older adults are still capable of presenting a powerful sermon and guiding the congregation after that age! I also disagree with the rule which states that a retiring pastor cannot attend the church he/she pastored for at least one year after retirement. I understand the premises for which this is written, but I don't agree with it.
