Suggestions for improvement

  • I feel that a true understanding of research, including grant writing and manuscript development, could go a long way for creating a more positive and supportive environment at my University. The other negatives or difficulties that I have had are difficult to address because they are part of the nature of the institution that I am at.

What I like about the company

The work life balance at my company is commendable. I am able to spend time with my family, which is the most important thing to me, while still being able to get my work done. I am free to come and go as I please, as long as I maintain my commitments to my teaching, research, and service opportunities. Being at the private institution that I am, we spend a lot of time in service to the community which some may view as a negative, however, I really enjoy being able to give back to the community. I have world class facilities which were not available to me at other potential job opportunities. The students that attend my university are top notch and, for the most part, are hungry for knowledge. This makes teaching the material to them easy and fun. I can spend more time on the material vs. trying to keep them engaged.

What I dislike about the company

The overall diversity is lacking within my company. I am the only minority in my department and sometimes I feel like I could be singled out because of it. Being that we are also a private institution that costs a lot of money to attend, our students also tend to be very homogenous, upper-middle class caucasian students. This makes it difficult to relate my own experiences to them because they do not have the diverse background that I come from. In my department, the junior faculty do not have as much support from senior faculty or administration that we should. The mission of the senior faculty is clearly different from that of the junior.

What I like about the company

Most of my coworkers, especially my supervisor were friendly and helpful.

What I dislike about the company

The University must treat contingent faculty better -- stability, income, etc.
