Company Culture

extremely dangerous work environment with clients allowed to injure and abuse staff and other clients and senior management just brushes these off and acts like it's not a big deal

Support from management

zilch - what do they care, as long as they are not the ones being abused and attacked; the senior management here has lost all sense of decency of how difficult this work is but they don't care, is all about the numbers not the quality of care

Teamwork

bunch of ruthless snakes trying to slither and crawl over one another to advance themselves up the ladder; no teamwork of any kind

Freedom to work independently

micromanaged..micromanaged some more....and micromanaged even more - all day long; the organization does not promote autonomy - too many policies to follow none of which make practical sense

Career Development

office politics will determine your advancement, not your skills or knowledge

Overall compensation for your work

too low for the work load

Office / Work Environment

it's really bad; lots of terminations and resignations - results in super ridiculous high turnover rate across whole organization, and work load falls on everyone else's shoulders whose has to pick up their slack of vacant positions never being filled

Work-Life Balance

the organization expect you to be at their beckon call day and night - constant short-staffing in the programs because they cannot hold onto staff for longer than a couple months; people constantly leaving due to fired or quitting

Company Image

their reviews are terrible yet nothing is done to address employee relations, incredible high turnover and burnout and all the sickening office politics - it's basically churn and burn environment here: revolving door of unqualified people in the positions, they all quit or get fired....then the cycle repeats - never ends

Job Security

can often feels like your skating on thin ice - especially if not part of management's in-crowd clique

Workplace Safety

even 1 star is too high; this is the worst area - the village in connecticut has the worst safety track record of any non-profit I have worked for; some people (me also for example) ended up seriously injured unable to return back to work for many weeks or months yet senior admin. did nothing and kept aggressive and unsafe clients in the program just to keep the money rolling in for having every bed filled (not caring about staff safety in the process)/ this organization: village is clearly about bottom line dollars and satisfying the sources of their funding dollars - staff safety here is the lowest priority

Inclusive / Diverse

lots of young immature staff without the same work ethics of more seasoned adults; a lot of this organization problems are avoidable if only they would stop hiring these young kids straight out of high school simply because they think it's cheaper to pay them and more cost effective

Suggestions for improvement

  • reduce turnover, value staff wellness to decrease exhaustion and burnout, give staff their breaks they are entitled to by law, serve more nutritious food in the programs instead of all the unhealthy junk food just because it's cheaper, show vindictive managers the door in a more timely fashion - create zero tolerance policies (and actually follow through) anytime there is vindication, empower your workforce instead of tying their hands with outdated policies which serve no clear purpose and just make the job 100 times harder than it should

What I like about the company

the medical plan here was better than my last job

What I dislike about the company

the food served is very unhealthy - actually got food poisoning here a couple times because the food was severely undercooked and raw; plus the food preparation guidelines are very unsanitary

Company Culture

Some people were alienated or blacklisted if they didn't conform to the belief systems of others in power. I was definitely one of them.

Support from management

The management in senior roles wasn't very understanding or realistic. They probably should have worked the front lines for a few months before creating policies that actually served more as obstacles.

Teamwork

The team I was on did not have a lot of unity. There was a lot of political ladder climbing and people undermining each other.

Freedom to work independently

There wasn't much. I felt micromanaged most of the time. My supervisor did not have very good management skills.

Gender Equality

Wasn't always equal at all times.

Career Development

A better career development plan is needed for employees.

Overall compensation for your work

I wished it was more especially for the on call duties. I felt like the compensation was not always competitive. It could have been responsible for a lot of the high turnover.

Office / Work Environment

It could have been better. But the culture here was too rigid. Most of the policies didn't make very much sense for example. There were several policies that just kind of seemed in place just because they were there.

Work-Life Balance

I wished the organization would have valued this more.

Company Image

This was the biggest disappointment for me. I felt like the organization didn't always adhere to their values statement. For example there was a lot of political in fighting here. Not much was done to address this. There were lots of anonymous rumors and allegations constantly floating around. Some people here appeared to thrive on ruining others professional reputations with slander and malicious rumors. Personnel seemed to me to do very little to address proper employee relations.

Job Security

Budget cutbacks and program closures were a typical part of daily work life. A lot of the funding comes from the state. So if there wasn't enough in the budget it was hard to know if you would still have a job.

Workplace Safety

There were safety committees. However they focused on some of the less important details. For example I noticed that a lot of people got injured here. I was even injured myself. There weren't measures in place to protect staff from the dangers posed by the clients. It was a pretty dangerous job at times.

Inclusive / Diverse

It all depends on the department you worked. Some were better than others.

Suggestions for improvement

  • A required curriculum on ethical work practices would be a good start. There was a lot of unethical stuff occurring here when I worked here. Also safety practices should improve. Be more selective about the types of clients who are accepted into the programs. Not all of them belong there. Some are just too dangerous and pose a serious safety risk.

What I like about the company

My colleagues were great. Some of the training for clinicians was relevant.

What I dislike about the company

There were a few. Safety should have been a greater focus. The clients here were allowed to injure others and vandalize property. Lots of money was wasted replacing broken property. However clients were never held accountable for their vandalism. Also the organization did not seem to have a very advanced training system for Personnel or management. There was often a lot of unethical and sometimes unlawful behavior occurring here. This occurred across many different departments in the organization.
