I love working at Theisen's. The people are great, everyone is helpful. The management is really supportive.

We have a great team atmosphere at our store. Everyone helps one another and the management is very good at setting the example.

Overall compensation for your work

Pay is low, but I came into this job with almost no retail experience. Working my way up from the bottom is not a problem for me.

Work-Life Balance

Sometimes, due to understaffing, our hours are switched around. This can be challenging for some employees.

I love the company, and especially our store. We have a great group of people and an awesome manager.

Challenging Work

A lot of it is fairly simple once you get the basics down. There are a lot of steps to remember and exceptions as well. Rotating departments is challenging in that you're always learning something new, some new way of doing something, and the particular preferences of your immediate supervisor.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Corporate should trust the managers more in the running of their stores, especially those who have been in retail for many years, and who know their customer base well. Corporate people should be encouraged to listen to all employees and not to play favorites.Cashiers need to be treated better. Everyone, even many customers, treat them like they're at the bottom of the food chain, all the while corporate and management talk up the importance of the cashier as the face of the company, since they see all the customers. Treat them better, offer more incentives to get good people in those positions.

What I like about the company

When my husband was unemployed last year, we lost our insurance. I needed to be full time in order to qualify. My manager was very helpful in getting me switched over from part time to full time. He patiently answered my questions and followed through.

What I dislike about the company

I think corporate is sometimes too hard on the stores, especially the three Wisconsin stores. What works in Iowa may not always work in another state, and the customer base is also different. Store managers need more autonomy, especially as concerns products for local business. I'd also like to see the stores able to order their own merchandise, as the buyers seem to be applying sales data across the board instead of tailoring it by region or individual store. We always seem to end up with too much of a product that doesn't sell well, and not enough of those that do.The training programs need more support from local management. I like that the employees can do online training on their own, but that which is required to be done at work and on the clock requires time made on the work schedule, which is not always possible, but could still be more supported by supervisors.
