Company Culture

The union and management never seemed to agree. The union was always looking for ways to sabotage production.

Support from management

My supervisors were mostly professional in their duties.

Teamwork

In my department on second shift we knew it would be better for all of us to work together.

Internal Communication

Biweekly meetings were informative and helpful. In the press room where I worked the employees voluntarily met with management before the shift to plan production.

Gender Equality

Women were encouraged and were some of the most productive employees.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Senior workers were hired if they had skills. Management seemed out to get some of the long term employees not always with good reason I felt.

Career Development

Management talked a good game at meetings. All the promotions seemed to go to management or important union people's relatives.

Overall compensation for your work

The two tiered wage system was terrible. I had to work 48 hours a week just to survive in a state of poverty.

Office / Work Environment

Great emphasis was placed on keeping the shop clean where it was possible.

Environmental Friendliness

Management was very socially aware. The union people could be very rude and insulting.

Work-Life Balance

The factory was very old. The machines broke continuously. Management would force employees to work for months at a time when with no days off when demand was high.

Company Image

Regionalaly it was good. Locally especially with the new hires it was terrible.

Job Security

When I was there we had a lot of work. I choose to work in a department where layoff was unlikely.

Handicapped Accessibility

There were no handicapped employees when I worked there. If you got hurt and were put on light duty you got a screwoff job.

Workplace Safety

This is the only thing management and the union work well together on. Safety training is always being carried out. Because of additional safety training I have had, I can pick many OSHA violations that would not necessarily in danger production workers.

Challenging Work

Management encouraged employees to try new things. The union advised employees to do as little as possible.

Inclusive / Diverse

Women were encouraged to try any position they wanted. There were no black employees when I worked there, and we were the only plant not to celebrate MLK day.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Bring up the wages of the tier two employees. Get more apprenticeships to people who are talented not connected. I feel the only chance for the long term survival of this factory is to run out the United steel workers.

What I like about the company

Managements efforts to keep the factory safe and productive. The attitudes of many long term employees who new the factory needed to be productive so we could all keep our jobs.

What I dislike about the company

The union bullying of tier two employees. Skilled trades lack of effort at keeping machines running( this was in part due to the union attitudes of we need to screw the company whenever we can.
