Attitude towards older colleagues

Longer serving colleagues were not around. The turnover rate of people was high.

There is a lot of dues paying to get even close to the point of being able to make a living off of this job.

Overall compensation for your work

Salaries were not paid on time. I repeatedly put in paper-work for direct deposit and it never went through. They changed payroll companies twice in just a few months. For several months I didn't receive my pay-checks at all because of an internal error. This did not just happen once. It happened three time in the space of a few months. I had to threaten legal action in order to get my old checks. The salary for an assistant manager was not a living wage.

Office / Work Environment

Broken employee toilet took about a week to fix. No break room. Lockers supposedly for employees were filled with things for fixtures and to store excess items.

Company Image

The internal talk of employees was a general sense of dis-satisfaction. Very few people were happy to work there.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Get a better website. Invest more in the computer system. Change the corporate culture. No matter how much we sold or did, it was never good enough (celebrate victories rather than setting impossible goals).

What I like about the company

The ability to share passion about movies and music with customers.

What I dislike about the company

The internal computer system (inventory, scheduling, payroll). The culture of treating people like sales numbers. The outdated company website. The somewhat exploitative buy-back system for used movies and music. The top-driven imperative to illegally cut over-time hours on payroll that people actually worked (ie change clocking times to "stay on budget" rather than reflect real clock-ins and clock-outs).
