UChicago Medicine experience report

  • 12.Jun 2019
  • Employee

I have had no issues working for the company. There are set pay increases and they help with school. Good place to work

4.72

Support from management

I have a good relationship with my managers and they are understanding with scheduling changes for school

Teamwork

As with all workplaces, some coworkers are hard to work with

Freedom to work independently

Little micromanaging

Internal Communication

Open line of communication through the chain of command and emails

Gender Equality

Most nurses are women

Attitude towards older colleagues

Nurses are part of the NNU , older nurses have more seniority and pay and get preferential treatment in terms of scheduling

Career Development

Currently 100% reimbursement for school for nurses pursuing a masters 75% for doctorate and for employees children who go to u of c schools

Overall compensation for your work

Highest paying hospital in Chicago for nurses to my knowledge

Office / Work Environment

Building has a modern design and technology , was built recently

Environmental Friendliness

There are recycling bins placed around the unit but as with all hospitals tends to be wasteful for infection control

Work-Life Balance

Work three days per week 12 hour shifts, weekends and holidays included

Company Image

Great organization to work for with grade a safety rating and good reputation

Handicapped Accessibility

All handicap accessible

Workplace Safety

All hospitals could use to increase their security

Challenging Work

Registered nurse with union set staffing ratios

Inclusive / Diverse

Supports opinions and has communities of nurses that can impact change

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would recommend additonal staffing to allow charge nurses to work without patients . It is a very stressful and demanding position. Also charge nurse should be a set position so you don’t have to switch back and Forth.

What I like about the company

I work with good people that work well as a team. My manager was previously a floor nurse and understands the challenges of being a staff nurse. School reimbursement takes 2-3 weeks and you are given a raise when you get your masters. There is a good mix of young and senior nurses that can provide insite and wisdom. I don’t feel the nurses eat their young on my floor but it depends what floor you work.

What I dislike about the company

The company can be nit picky about following guidelines and procedures like clock in and clock out times. In my experience working another union job prior to finishing school, this is sometimes the only way people can get disciplined.
