Company Culture

Not a good work, life balance.
Company pushed to have employees work for free and long hours.
They are very rigid on employees working at site and 5 days a week even though some of the employees homes are 2-3 hours away and work for some doesn't need to be physically everyday in office. The traffic is very bad commuting to work. Offices are very cramped. They would expect employees to work late with no notice if needed but if employee wanted to flex-time to take off Friday or Monday for long weekend, they didn't allow it. The employee had to use their precious few, vacation days. Benefits are not good.

Support from management

No feedback or support from management.
Asked for feedback a few times, never received it.
Had a death of a very close loved-one in family and received no support or consideration regarding that.

Teamwork

I was left to myself to try to learn new programs with very little help, not even a manual.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Younger employees praised easily. Old ones were pushed hard and not many praised. 1 older employee brought a lot of work to the company and maintained bringing work from those companies. He was passed over for employee of the month many times by younger ones that didn't even do nearly as much for the company as this engineer did.

Career Development

Career development is good for the young employees but not so much for older. This is typical in most work places.

Office / Work Environment

Very cramped. UEC lost an office space and instead of finding new office space, crammed us in very tiny office space together.

Environmental Friendliness

No recycling.

Work-Life Balance

No flex-time or ability to work from home some days.

Company Image

They work hard to develop quality, hybrid power and also medical equipment. They try hard to find cost effective solutions for the military.

Job Security

Very high turnover

Challenging Work

Really enjoyed the work. It was challenging and interesting. It was 1 of the main reasons I took this job even knowing there was a high turnover.

What I like about the company

1. Company uses good software tools and keeps up on the version of them.
2. The work is very interesting
3. Because it's a small company, it is more streamlined than large companies.

What I dislike about the company

Poor work-life balance. Company needs to realize it goes both ways. If they want their employees to work late and go the extra mile for company schedule, UEC needs to value and treat well their employees. This is why this company has such a VERY large turnover of employees. It doesn't treat majority of its employees/contractors well.

Company Culture

There are cliques at UEC. When you are new, you get caught up in the small company vibe but it becomes clear rather quickly that things aren't as warm and inviting as they appear initially.

Support from management

There is a clear need for more tools to support documentation, and requirements tracking. Management is aware but unwilling to pay the cost of doing business.

Freedom to work independently

There is a fair amount of micro-managing. Some roles are expected to do other role's work and heavy lifting. At least put that in the job description in the req so people know what they are getting into.

Career Development

Advancement seems to be non-existance. I spoke with folks that had advanced degrees that were being held back in roles that had far less required education/skills.

Overall compensation for your work

The base pay was comparable to others in the area. The benefits were horribly expensive being a smaller company. If you decide to work for UEC, factor this into your negotiations; I wish I would have.

Office / Work Environment

There are some new prodcuts that brough with them new hazards and the business has failed to adapt and adequately address the issue. Perhaps an external Job Hazard Analysis for all areas would benefit everyone before there is an accident and someone gets injured.

Environmental Friendliness

They meet minimal standards or are working toward it. UEC does give money and support to local and national charitable organizations.

Work-Life Balance

You work when there is work and that sometimes includes OT, but you are compensated for the OT most of the time.

I don't know where this fits in this review so it'll go hear: employees spend A LOT of time and gas commuting from the main campus to satellites in the area and go uncompensated and reimbursed. There are only 3 or 4 miles between them but a few times each day all week for years adds up.

Company Image

The image is great. The reality of what is happening in juxtaposition of that image is not. Do what you say you do.

Job Security

If you are in the clique and you watch your politics, you'll be fine....but if you aren't, you'll be subject to layoffs and furloughs.

Workplace Safety

There are watered down policies in place when there should be clear and absolute specifics. There are building housing hazardous and highly flammable/explosive materials that don't have the requisite extinguishing and sprinkler devices. If they don't analyze and improve, it is only a matter of time until something happens and hopefully nobody gets hurt. Posting signs only gets you part of the way, you ultimately have to upgrade your infrastructure to support new hazards introduced.

Challenging Work

Most of the challenge in the work is meeting the super aggressive schedule that gets pout together and managing doing other role's work in addition to your own. If realism and accountability were in place, the job would be pretty vanilla. They like to say they are innovating but there is little that is new or cutting edge going on.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Improve safety and infrastructure, break up the cliques, get qualified people and let them be accountable for their own work and make it ok for the folks doing their work to say, "no, do your own work."

What I like about the company

They have some wonderful and talented people.

What I dislike about the company

The cliquey nature and the stranglehold of politics the place has.
