Suggestions for improvement

  • Continue to focus on developing staff and giving folks the opportunity to move up in the organization (very few promotions occur here)

What I like about the company

It's a good place to work that I recommend to friends. No place is without it's challenges however. We work 45 hour weeks (officially) when other comparable places work between 35-40 hour weeks. The time off during the holidays is nice, though, but we don't get every holiday off during the rest of the year (i.e. work straight through from MLK day to Memorial Day)

What I dislike about the company

work week schedule and benefits are pretty expensive (including parking)

What I like about the company

This company is supportive of employees. This is evident through the professional development opportunities offered, benefits, and the open communication from administration.

What I dislike about the company

No feedback to provide right now. My experience has been very positive to date. Parking is pricey, however that is normal from my past experiences at other institutions.

Company Culture

It's awful -- mostly like teaching in an isolation booth. They work with a difficult population of students, but faculty come in and teach their classes and go home. There is scarcely any intellectual life at Blue Ash College to speak of.

Support from management

The administration asks the faculty to do more with less. Students are backed in appeals over faculty. Faculty are expected to coddle these "college" students. You could describe UCBA as a high school with ashtrays, but all tobacco is now banned University wide, so they've even taken away the ashtrays.

Teamwork

I've never seen such a collection of back-biting, self-interested political creatures in my life.

Freedom to work independently

Figure out what you want to teach and when, and choose carefully because you will be teaching the same classes at the same times for the rest of your career. Forget about choosing your textbook -- the department is going to choose it for you. If it's important to you, you'd better get on the textbook selection committee.

Internal Communication

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Don't look to the union for much help. AAUP can protect you from administrators but not from toxic colleagues.

Gender Equality

The faculty and professional staff have a very high fraction of women in positions of responsibility.

Career Development

Lots of lip service, some action. Like anyplace else, if you want career development you have to seek it out yourself.

Overall compensation for your work

Fringe benefits are great, but that's thanks to the union (AAUP). The faculty are the lowest-paid faculty among all Ohio public university campuses. Really.

Office / Work Environment

The campus is seedy and run-down. A renovation program has started but it will not be complete for at least five years and probably longer than that, because the funding is not in place for the out years.

Environmental Friendliness

As they renovate, they are paying careful attention to LEED principles.

Work-Life Balance

The promotion and tenure system is the most toxic I've ever seen. The senior faculty say, "Consider your work-life balance and be sure to have a life". Then they turn around and hack your work to pieces in the RPT process.

Job Security

You don't want job security there. Seriously.

Handicapped Accessibility

It's okay for now when you consider the age of the physical plant. When the renovation program is finished (in the indefinite future) it will actually be good. Really good.

Challenging Work

Teaching unprepared students college-level material is as challenging as it gets.

Inclusive / Diverse

UCBA is so committed to diversity that it hires unqualified faculty to enhance the faculty diversity. What a place!

Suggestions for improvement

  • Fix the RPT process. Listen to the faculty both as individuals and collectively (via the union).

What I like about the company

Good fringe benefits, flexible work schedule.

What I dislike about the company

Back-stabbing colleagues, a ridiculous RPT process, nightmare students.
