Suggestions for improvement

  • I think that there needs to be some consistency that brought into the position. While working in Residence Life there was always something added to my job description every 4-6 months that I was not prepared for. While we were able to adapt to this. It would have been better to try and make smaller changes one at a time to the system rather then large scale over hauls all the time. It would have allowed employees to better transition through the changes and want to keep returning.

What I like about the company

While working in Residence Life I found myself working as part of a supportive team. From management to my peer employees I found that it was a place that people were willing to offer a helping hand and still placed school and classes above the job that you were being asked to do. As a student I couldn't have asked for a better college job.

What I dislike about the company

Due to that fact that staff was made up of undergrad and graduate students really just starting out in the professional world I would say that there wasn't always the level of professionalism displayed durring meetings and in other staff interactions. However this is to be expected from this population of employees and is something that the company is working on.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Competitive salaries, better parking rates (multi-level based on a sliding pay scale), increase morale by listening to staff, offering courses/programs/classes that allow for movement and new trainings. Reduce workloads. Better health care options. A matching 401K option would be nice.

What I like about the company

The campus is very diverse with many cultures represented. Most faculty and staff care tremendously about their students and typically go above and beyond to assist students with their academic and personal needs. More of that needs to happen.

What I dislike about the company

I disapprove of many things here now. Being here over 20 years I feel that the campus has disproportionately grown in the wrong direction. Staff are separated and expected to do more with less. Unfair and burdensome workloads, increasing stress levels, not enough resources to do our jobs properly. The costs associated with being an employee here are truly outweighing the benefits. Upper administration and management are forcing a legacy debt and years of financial mismanagement to be paid using the backs of the current employees and students. It is a not a constructive atmosphere. It is a demoralizing atmosphere! Management needs to realize that they are not a for profit private organization. They must listen to the needs of the employees and give us the resources that are needed to make this wonderful institution of learning a true success story. If management would step back and place themselves in our shoes they might learn that we are not making up the difficulties we are facing in our day to day life. More competitive salaries, flexible hours for ALL employees and not just professional staff, reasonable workloads - hiring people instead of laying off the lowest paid members of our staff. U-Mass Boston needs to start recognizing that its members are human beings and we deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and consideration. Honestly, at this juncture in my career, I could not recommend to any family, friend or anyone in general, to come work in this destructive environment.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I found working at UMass Lowell to be a fairly positive experience that was massively impacted in a negative fashion by a supervisor who was only removed once an anonymous reddit post was shared not after multiple employees lodged complaints through human resources. The job security for union positions is great. In my role, the work life balance was terrible with the expectation that you work nights while also working the union mandated 8:30am-5pm day. This expectation could have been made by my supervisory versus a schoolwide policy. I would recommend the right position at UMass Lowell to someone, but supervisors need to make expectations clear during the hiring process.

What I like about the company

I enjoyed the environment between my colleagues, outside of the supervisors. Coworkers in the same union roles were particularly wonderful. Resources are readily available and the benefits are strong.

What I dislike about the company

A particular supervisor who has since been fired due to her misconduct. Work-life balance was nonexistent. Starting pay was low relative to the role and time expectations. Raises are also infrequent due to slow union action.
