Support from management
Management is often busy with a myriad of other issues does not always take into account effects and opinions of various employees.
While there are 'specialties' within the department, everyone works with a common goal. Colleagues however do not interact in a positive or professional manner.
Freedom to work independently
After training, you are expected to be self-sufficient and ask questions only when necessary.
Communication between upper and lower levels is very poor, management often does not communicate with employees about changes within the department.
While there is a distinct female majority, there is definitely equal opportunity for both genders regarding career paths and payment.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Experience is needed for entry, but senior colleagues are often leads in their specialties.
There is a solid career track within the lab and the lab will allow educational opportunities to be taken.
Office / Work Environment
Classical laboratory setup - everything you need is provided.
Few recycling bin are available, large amount of biohazardous waste is created from the department.
There is a large amount of emphasis on providing for family time. While some weekends or overtime are mandatory, there is ample approval for needed time off / sick leave.
Genetics is always growing and there will always be jobs being created with new ways to analyze and diagnose.
Since there is no direct patient contact, it is easy to forget how you affect people outside of the lab. When you realize it, the work is very satisfying. The work is not necessarily difficult.
Inclusive / Diverse
Diverse opinions are sometimes frowned upon, especially when they include ways to improve laboratory processes. For the most part, it follows the thought of, "If it works, don't change it."
Suggestions for improvement
- Some locations consistently poll in for department satisfaction as very low. Those locations may need to be visited by HR and surveyed anonymously with check-ups.
What I like about the company
Multiple benefits, fantastic availability for tuition reimbursement.
What I dislike about the company
Pay is usually low for entry level positions and since the average retention of employees is 13 years, there are not always open positions available to move up.
