Praise is more of an obligation and doesn't have the same feel that other universities usually have.
Support from management
There is very little support from administration, both financially and in person contact, for our department. A more hands on approach would better help them understand of what our job entails.
Immediate supervisor makes for a wonderful environment, but once you get past that collaborative duo administration is all but non-existent.
Freedom to work independently
Because of the nature of my position the "workload" and time spent is what it is, but as to having a say so in any changes isn't a possibility.
There is little to no communication from administration other than the occasional email stating what we can or cannot do. Our department seems to be looked down upon compared to other departments which breeds the lack of actual communication.
Considering the fact that this university is a liberal arts college, gender equality isn't a problem either way.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Mostly from the outside looking in the attitude towards older employees is no different than towards younger employees. There is a pecking order from older employees down.
This area is horrible. The university should consider revising their standards for further education assistance and advancement opportunities.
Overall compensation for your work
This is the one area that is forcing me to aggressively search for another opportunity in another field. My salary does not match the amount of work hours or responsibilities associated with the position. Other universities in my state, and other states, pay my position 2/3 and 3/4 more than my current salary. As a result, this has forced me to live well below poverty level and get into extreme debt just to try to get close to surviving. There are no benefits or reimbursements for work related expenses. If you broke down how much I make hourly, because of the hours and time spent on the job, my wage comes out to $1.65 per hour. I see this as a complete lack of respect towards me and how hard I work at my craft. People can't work for free.
Office / Work Environment
The working conditions are fine, subpar but fine. Our university is lagging behind other universities because of budget cuts and lack of funding. The electronic resources required to do the job are also lagging behind which makes the job more than difficult to do most of the time. This is partially because the university doesn't find our department as important as others.
This is an area that's never discussed or mentioned in any way.
Once again, because of the nature of my position this isn't an area that is taken into consideration. My position is hardly a part-time position and the hours worked are far more than full-time hours, and my compensation hardly reflects these shortcomings.
Most employees speak well of the university but the low salaries across the board, except for a select few, is always a concern and topic of discussion.
Job security is there BUT employees are constantly searching for other opportunities because of low wages. Most people, unless it's a last resort, wouldn't take such a low paying position.
Accessibility isn't and never should be an issue at company or organization.
Not a problem or issue here.
The position and work is very challenging, and equally stressful, but when we are successful it makes the job worth it.
Inclusive / Diverse
Not an area discussed directly.
Suggestions for improvement
- Increase wages and funding across the board or it will be impossible to keep quality employees for an extended period of time.
What I like about the company
I love the people that I work with directly.
What I dislike about the company
Lack of positive communication and the wage.
