Threatening. Laborers manipulated or convinced they will worship UPS and they will work like animals beyond safety and ergonomic reasoning or logic. Labor and industries (L&I) investigating / observing there all the time. Not worth the pay rate to abuse yourself in that way - not a fair trade of your back breaking labor. Some drivers or other co-workers knowingly standing in the way of others who are scrambling to load of conveyor belts, as a form of ongoing harassment. There were some organized cliques who seem to get special treatment. Teamsters don't come around like they used to years ago looking out for us or observing. Not responding to complaints or concerns.
Some of the loaders help each other but it's not encouraged or appreciated anymore by supervisors and even discouraged. Some supervisors seem to be narcissistic in the way they are always right and are talented on putting the spotlight or blame on someone else lower than them.
Write-ups are the form of communication. Mandatory classes for new employees to apply ergonomics and safety measures that realistically and logically cannot be applied with their abusive demands and set up and they don't listen to the concerns or suggestions of the labor workers. These classes are all for show, probably for L&I insurance discounts or demands.
If you have low seniority your hours / days could be erratically cut suddenly or unpredictably without pay and benefits.
Of course everyone loves the well known UPS and the brown trucks who brings them presents or packages to their doorsteps . They have been around for an extremely long time. But they are not what they used to be and now hiring anyone off the streets through revolving doors.
If you are dependable, have friends in the right places, meet the quotas, and will take the physical abuse, or report a legit L&I injury claim, you might eventually stay and be promoted (with seniority).
Inclusive / Diverse
Didn't see any sign of racism there. Sexual and age harassment was evident towards some by a couple young supervisors who probably need harassment classes who have a lack of experience, insight, and tact.
Suggestions for improvement
- More realistic physical demands and conditions, And better overall system and lessen all the ridiculous mis-loads and errors. Problem solving in areas where some have more of a heavier work load assigned daily than others especially with the new in training employees. Better communication from the front end down to the lines / conveyor belts of increased volume, overweights or larger irregulars, address or label errors, or of dozens of large items like tires going to one assigned delivery truck (not going to fit - need to make early arrangements , duh ). Appreciation....Tell the laborers / loaders they are the backbone of the company - they would not exist at all without them. Give them some bonuses or incentive or even gatorades like they used to back in the day instead of threats or manipulative harassment. Need to work on the moral.
