Reviews for UPS

Reviews - What employees say

3.41 Employees say

Company Culture

There are a lot of great events as well as rewards that the company hosts. UPS is also involved in the community. Bosses can be understanding of different culture views. Well round group of individuals run the place and it can make it a great work environment.

Support from management

When I ask for help or tools needed to assist in my job management always pulls through

Teamwork

We are told to ask for help when moving things but it is frowned spin when you actually communicate with your neighbors.

Freedom to work independently

Majority of the time I am left alone to complete things on my own move with the work.

Internal Communication

There have been occasional situations where there was a lot of he said she said type of communication between the bosses to staff.

Gender Equality

Has a female in the company I feel management does treat me equal. Some of the older coworkers that have been there for years however seem to frown apon women in the work place.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Older employees are well respected in the workplace. They recieve equal pay and opportunities.

Career Development

Free education for whatever you want to use it for moving forward is always an option.

Overall compensation for your work

Sometimes it feels the money is not enoug. But the health care is more then enough and makes it worth it.

Office / Work Environment

If you are in the right spots in the building you are warm during the winter cool in the summer. But most areas you have to dress for the weather even when inside. Temperature can range anywhere from 30' to 110'. Dress the part.

Environmental Friendliness

There are recycling bins everywhere.

Work-Life Balance

We have a safety committee that gives you life wellness tips to help you have a happy home life as well as a safe work life

Company Image

I really enjoy working for UPS wouldn't use any other company for shipping purposes.

Job Security

Unloading trailers can not be done by a machine so yes I feel there will always be a need for my position

Handicapped Accessibility

Not really sure it's a safe place for those with those kind of needs.

Workplace Safety

They try to train but usually there aren't enough trains for everyone so you just learn the basics and take off pick stuff up as you go.

Challenging Work

The only challenges that you would be faced with is strength. You need to have a strong body and be able to left heavy objects on your own.

Inclusive / Diverse

Not really a place for ideas and options. You just put the box's where they go.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Leaving people in one set of trucks and letting that be their permanent work area day to day so they can get used to the loads rather then moving them all over to areas they have to relearn.

What I like about the company

When I was in a car accident on my way to work. My boss came and got me out. My window was shuddered I was cold he brought me gloves a hat blanket until the cops arrived. I received paid sick time to recover from the accident and light work when I returned

What I dislike about the company

Some of the supervisors do not know how to talk to people and go on what I call a power trip. They get bossy and don't accomplish the job properly and criticize us for not working hard enough. When we are exhausted and dripping with sweat from hard manual labor.

Company Culture

teammates are great, upper management too driven and understandably so but could ease up a little

Support from management

Support is getting the job done and on time, support is not quite what i would call it

Teamwork

indirectly achieves this by making employees work together for each other...in other words we, the employees, give each other the human touch

Freedom to work independently

trust is vital for success in my job

Internal Communication

communicates but too regimented and curt...in my opinion should be more humane

Gender Equality

company does this well....no gender just cogs in the machine

Attitude towards older colleagues

I would say this is true but given the nature of the work, older people should aspire for upper management or desk oriented work

Career Development

Growth is there but in my opinion comes down to who you know

Overall compensation for your work

in all honesty yes

Office / Work Environment

i would say yes as far as work environment our needs are met

Environmental Friendliness

could be better but it is an operation that relies more on speed and effiency (sp) than proper recycling

Work-Life Balance

if i could use the analogy, we are cogs in the machine...and the emphasis is on the cogs moving nothing else

Company Image

The pride comes more from working than say the company in my case.

Job Security

not sure, automation and AI makes us all a little nervous

Handicapped Accessibility

yes, there are handicap resources accessible to those who need them

Workplace Safety

most definatly. safety is paramount.

Challenging Work

it is demanding, it is deadline oriented ...competetive and requires customer satisfaction

Inclusive / Diverse

would say yes, as in gender, your race does not exist, forgive me for using the cog analogy again but it applies here as well

Suggestions for improvement

  • Treat the workers more humanely, make them feel they matter as people. Sometimes the current environment can create the appearance of an adversarial relationship between workers and management and I say "appearance". By the same token a few kind words and acknowledgement of the individual can create the "appearance" of a complete esprit de corps.

What I like about the company

My experiences that are positive come from the employees themselves. We have a comradely. We have joy from helping and supporting one another. This is/was achieved by the demanding work environment and less than human touch of our overlords. Please do not misunderstand this for complaining, they have a job to do too. But in this "adversity" our humanity for one another flourishes, that is what i would call a positive experience.

What I dislike about the company

More "love", by that more understanding that the company is fully aware that we know we have deadlines to meet and by easing up on the go go go attitude the system will not collapse. In my opinion productivity would actually increase if it demonstrated that the workers are people and not just cogs in the machine and management cared and had the employees back.

Challenging Work

This job may be challenging with keeping up with the demand of completing shipments.

Suggestions for improvement

  • It would be great to have a cafeteria or vendors to come in to the workplace weekly due to the fact that our unpaid lunch break is 30 mins and our job is located by one of the most congested roads in the city especially during lunch time. Receiving childcare subsidy would be a huge help for parents who would like to continue working and/or work more hours. Actively listening to employees and making changes when necessary would create a more comfortable environment to work in. Knowing that when issues or concerns are addressed that they will be handled aides in keeping confidence in the employees and encourages feedback. Currently doctor notices and excuses are not accepted for missed days/times at work and I believe that should change. People have went into labor, or even had an heart attack and had to be escorted by ambulance to the hospital and were still penalized for leaving early. Expectations for meeting goals can be unrealistic at times. Lowering and raising the goals per current business needs or current amount of shipments would reduce the stress some employees deal with during the slower and during the peak seasons. Updating seating for each employee could possibly reduce the amount of people who would need to see chiropractors. An employee requested a new chair from management due to the fact the one they had was broken and would not move up/down and would pop and creak at the slightest movement. The employee was given another broken chair that was found in the facility and the request for a new chair was never submitted.

What I like about the company

I have learned many skills that will allow me to be an asset to many different companies in the future. Also, I have made many different professional connections that I look forward to networking with in the near future.

What I dislike about the company

When conflict arises it is not handled quickly and it tends to lead to tension among the employees. Flexibility to handle unexpected life events can be pretty slim especially when first joining the company and you have not accrued any personal time to use to avoid being penalized for attendance. During many times of the year overtime is highly encouraged. We do not receive Childcare subsidy to assist with finding adequate childcare especially upon short notice. Many times the employees voice is not heard. From experience I have went as far as to submit concerns to HR through the corporate website and never received a reply.
