Company Culture

All my comments concern the BLM Casper Field Office (CFO) from March 2012 through March 2013. The CFO is best described by the fact that I filed and won an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) claim against the Department of Interior. This is not the place to work if one is non-caucasian, female, of a certain age, disabled, and/or holds what people in the Field Office view as unacceptable spiritual beliefs (which means nothing other than a few Protestant denominations, Mormon, non-practicing Catholic, atheist, or agnostic). The rating for this and all other feel-good factors should be zero rather than one star. A zero rating is not possible for this survey.

Gender Equality

All my comments concern the BLM Casper Field Office (CFO) from March 2012 through March 2013. The CFO is best described by the fact that I filed and won an EEOC action against the Department of Interior. This is not the place to work if one is non-caucasian, female, of a certain age, disabled, and/or holds what people in the CFO view as unacceptable spiritual beliefs (anything other than a few Protestant denominations, Mormon, non-practicing Catholic, atheist, or agnostic). It is my understanding that very few, if any, changes have occurred following my EEOC case.

With the exception of handicap access, the rating for this and all other career factors should be zero rather than one star. A zero rating is not possible for this survey.

Workplace Safety

On my first day working at CFO, a co-worker shook her clenched fist in my face and yelled that she would "beat the s***" out of me if did anything she didn't like or mistreated her friend who also worked at CFO. My supervisor did nothing after I reported the incident. Two of my former co-workers told me the woman made similar repeated threat to them. The supervisor also did nothing about such threats.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Obviously, racism, prejudice, ageism, misogyny, and discrimination (hereinafter collectively referred to as discrimination) must stop. Employees must be encouraged to report incidents of discrimination and threats of physical harm, and such incidents must be appropriately addressed. Rather than having someone in the Cheyenne office (177 miles from Casper) deal with such issues, someone onsite needs to handle and act upon complaints, especially when supervisors fail or refuse to take action. In addition, diversity awareness and related training must occur, as well as training about what constitutes discrimination. Some employees and supervisors lacked understanding of, or totally disregarded, what is acceptable. For example, one employee felt free to tell me that the government should have killed all the Native Americans when it had the chance, and another told me that I needed to be "more white" (whatever that means). Further, there must be clear, consistently applied penalties for EEO and ADA violations.

What I like about the company

I liked nothing about the CFO other than I received a paycheck, had health insurance, and formed a strong friendship with a co-worker.

What I dislike about the company

Racism, prejudice, ageism, misogyny, and discrimination ran rampant when I worked at CFO, and apparently has continued to the present.

Overall compensation for your work

If it was possible, the rating would be zero or less for all categories other than compensation. Pervasive discrimination existed. Many individuals in supervisory positions lacked the education and experience necessary to effectively fulfill their jobs and provide proper leadership. In one section, employees tried to sabotage co-workers to get someone fired or obtain a promotion. Management did nothing about an employee who had a history of threatening to physically harm coworkers.
