Company Culture

I think that although the representatives are helpful, very communicative and try to be available to their working tutors to help resolve issues, the actual role they play is exploitative and greed based. They try to placate the tutors if they suffer mist

Support from management

While I am left to my own devices to find or find reference materials, I will say they are always willing and available to discuss concerns. The listeners are not the direct managers of the client cases however and have little power to make changes. We ar

Freedom to work independently

I would say that the lack of intrusion is the one of the best aspects of their approach. However it is probably motivated by the recognition that rigid delegating would involve a lot more work for them and they are more efficient by just requiring rigorou

Internal Communication

I'd say I felt my success was not rewarded other than superficially. The work necessitates highly qualified and talented people in order to operate successfully. But we are only seen as reliable cash cows

Gender Equality

The company does not offer preferential treatment for any other basis than performance

Attitude towards older colleagues

I have no knowledge on this matter. I assume they want to provide the range of candidates that suits the desired expectations of the clients. Older people are not considered risky or likely underqualified representatives to present for the perceived expec

Career Development

The job is only beneficial in this way in the sense that it is a very self-perpetuated opportunity to learn to teach by jumping in feet first. They have no interest in building their 'field soldiers' for their future endeavors. Anything we get from this i

Overall compensation for your work

The company is shamefully exploitative, deliberately unwilling to openly confess the disparity between the rates they charge as a go-between and the percentage the actual workers receive (roughly 15-20% of the rates paid by clients for services. They give

Work-Life Balance

I can work as much or as little as I please and organize my schedule any way I choose. However it does not pay enough to live on without enormous work commitments

Company Image

I am happy that it works for my current purposes but they incite no loyalty or pride or community. I am little more than another resource for them to exploit

Job Security

I feel my position is not sustainable as a truly feasible way to make a living. As long as I am successful in my work, I am provided consistent work opportunities

Handicapped Accessibility

There are no facilities, no travel compensation, no insurance or perks such as opportunities to pursue further professional development

Workplace Safety

They are not concerned with the safety of tutors particularly. We have no support but platitudes when we experience mistreatment. Parents are given the comfort of knowing we are vetted and they can complain and find immediate action taken when they are d

Challenging Work

Working this job properly involves extensive prep work, uncompensated travel, direct negotiation with clients and constantly shifting demands

Suggestions for improvement

  • I believe that I just answered this by answering what I would ideally envision for this type of service industry. Varsity Tutors squander this unique opportunity to provide a meaningful resource and entity that could be a holistic company that offers the

What I like about the company

The company allows for a relatively safe meeting place for people to meet. It is a great learning experience. The company is a greedy, clever corporate collective that exploits their core work force and clients. They have no collective conscious or concer

What I dislike about the company

I would create a system that nurtures and values the work of the tutors and provides rewards and stability and fair compensation for the work. I would provide legitimate access to free materials, not the sham of a few slapped together assessment tests cre

What I like about the company

During training, I was introduced to several coworkers who "baby-sat" me through me through the process. They made sure I knew how to handle and respond to pretty much any situation. My boss is amazing, and always willing to go out of her way to make sure I have everything I need. I can work from the office, at the students' homes, or from my own home, none of which affects my pay. My students love me, so do my coworkers, and again, my boss is amazing.

What I dislike about the company

The lack of professionalism from a very few others.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I think Varsity should start woth a higher baseline salary for tutors, and give raises to tutors who have worked for the company for some time.

What I like about the company

When a student did not show up for a meeting, the company was good about interceding for me and making sure I was paid for my time. Also, occasionally they would give me a bonus in salary if I had to drive a long ways to get to a student's home.

What I dislike about the company

The salary is way too low. They expect tutors to give quality, one to one tutoring for only $20/hour, and online lessons for $15/hour . I had to prepare my own lessons, also, and I always had a commute to get to the students' house.
