VCA has very high expectations of their employees, a stressful work environment, mediocre pay, and high...
Suggestions for improvement
- Stop expecting one technician or one assistant to be able to do the work of four (it's ridiculous). If the company can expect such things from us, then we should be able to expect exemplary compensation for putting ourselves through it.
What I like about the company
The company provides an enormous amount of training to ensure continuity of care. There are opportunities within the company for specialization in many areas of veterinary medicine. As a technician, you get to work with some of the best doctors in the area and there are many different doctors and technicians to learn from. The company provides sophisticated equipment that most other hospitals/facilities are not able to provide. The company is also set up nationwide, and transferring to another state is always an available option.
What I dislike about the company
Constant micromanagement of every aspect of everything you have to do as a doctor or technician. It is overwhelming enough to have to provide superior care to each patient that comes in, but then you have to add in corporate scrutiny to everything you do. There are never ending emails providing you with never ending criticism. Overall, there is an oppressive/negative atmosphere within the hospital (always high tension, never laid back). Pay does not reflect the amount of stress that you have to endure. There seems to be very little regard in retaining technicians for any length of time. This is all reflected in a high turn-over rate.
